(if you wanna argue there too few mutations then i can say mutations are not the only way to produce changes in the genes the other more common way is by sexual reproduction)

there is a process that randomly selects parts from the father and the mother which then gets put together in this process you have often some kind of errors or mixing from genes appear that can cause changes in the genes

ofc unviable dna leads to dying fetuses or death in early childhood etc (imagen tumor that kills you early on caused by gene defect)

we for example know such things happen often even today and in the past those humans/animals died before they could reproduce etc
