2018-09-13 02:36:59 UTC

I definitely agree with Patrick's remark about Roman LARPing.

2018-09-13 02:37:34 UTC

We are Roman larping now? IE Toga party when?

2018-09-13 02:37:53 UTC

2018-09-13 02:38:43 UTC

Roman larping minus the opening borders to hostile tribes part 😀

2018-09-13 02:40:01 UTC

Roman LARPing is an American tradition

"This is the closest I'll get to a 'This is Sparta' moment" ~ Corey Booker at Senate hearing.

2018-09-13 02:43:36 UTC

They can't even let us have Spartans without trying to steal it. 😒

2018-09-13 02:44:21 UTC

random aside, y'all ever find it funny how greeks larp as Spartans yet Spartans never considered themselves even greek 😅

2018-09-13 02:45:17 UTC

@Deleted User Wasn't aware that they didn't consider themselves Greek, but yeah, it is ironic, given that modern Greece is pretty much Magna Athena.

2018-09-13 02:46:01 UTC

to my recollection, they considered themselves as a distinct group (I beleive from the north) seperate from the rest

2018-09-13 02:46:26 UTC

Their mythos had them as descendants of some great people or something

2018-09-13 02:46:29 UTC

Huh. Kinda like the Trojans, I guess.

2018-09-13 02:46:31 UTC

I'll relook at it

2018-09-13 03:27:02 UTC

This is probably close to what Latin actually sounded like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np5v6n3lxmI

2018-09-13 03:36:45 UTC

Ben Hur-Hur-Hur...

2018-09-13 03:38:36 UTC

@Deleted User That is a cool march, though.

2018-09-13 03:55:10 UTC

we do know that Romans did marching songs

2018-09-13 04:02:44 UTC

@Deleted User well no one really had a Greek Identity at the time. They identified as Athenians, Spartans, Acadians, etc

2018-09-13 04:04:54 UTC

When I find what I was referencing again I'll send it, but if anything they were Dorian (northerly migrated) and their mythos is the main thing they emphasized.

2018-09-13 04:15:41 UTC

The best documentation of Roman soldiers singing on the march was during Triumphs, and they were usually used as entertainment to the crowds or veneration/comedic mocking of their commander and was more celebratory than militaristic. We know they sang occasionally, and we have a good guess of how it sounded based on their syntax etc, but yeah, the Ben hur clip is absolutely incorrect. Still a great clip though
