I adhere to The Golden One's advice on the anime question, as should you: If it inspires you to improve your life, it is worth spending a small amount of time watching. If it consumes all of your leisure and/or inspires degeneracy, it is bad.

Growing up, Goku was my hero. Now in a healthy culture we would inspire boys with tales of our own myths and true histories. But late nineties USA was not a healthy culture, however comparatively quaint it seems now.
