I have also thought Vietnam was meant to perform a similar thing- filter out bravery and strength, while undermine the homeland with the same ideology we were ostensibly over there to fight. It is the only way the discrepancy makes sense that we would go to Vietname but not Rhodesia

WW1 wiped out all the young men from entire towns. After that, they intentionally mixed up soldiers from different locations. Western Europe never fully recovered

It is interesting to compare the attitudes of elites who experienced the war firsthand (like Mosley) to those who dictated policies from afar (like Churchill)

Officers who never served before-hand are generally hated within the Military for the reasons you would expect
@The Eternal Anglo @TMatthews here's a book that shows similar. The man compiled letters from all over Britain asking for Britons' experiences during the war and also asking if they'd do it again. Overwhelming the answer was "no" because of the loss of their nation to immigration
