I don’t know that I’d argue it’s exclusively an economic model. It’s definitely a unifying point, but if you speak with the “laypeople” you’ll find an obsession with purity, a preoccupation with the avoidance of “sin,” etc. It is extremely orthodox in its constitution, at least by the people who use it as a means for moral direction and social identification. Definitely agree the vast majority of the neo-liberal “clergy” just care about money though.
