Identity is so important to minorities, I told a girl I didn't know about my Irish heritage until recently and she was dumbfounded I didn't know. @fgtveassassin I think for whites it depends on how many generations removed you are and how much your ethnic group tried to retain their identity. Greeks, for example, send their kids to Greek school where they learn the language and culture. Italians, on the other hand, besides culinary and religious traditions, sought to 'become American' by not teaching their kids Italian, generally speaking.
