He's prevented a ton of smearing by journalists and effectively tied their hands using a lawyer and threatening them with defamation lawsuits
I remember one particular article calling them white supremists he targeted and they resorted to changing it to "ultra-nationalist"

fun fact: your average research college receives more money in grants and private companies paying for research than they do from students paying tuition
this is defended as being "normal"
science is way more politicized in colleges
and by "more" I'm talking (at least with my school) a ratio of 3-4:1 for money received from companies versus students
so you _can_ call professors corporate whores, and in most cases you'd be right
