I usually have a good grasp on the reasons for why things happen in politics, I honestly haven't a clue why he moved the embassy, but here goes a few possibilities:

Pleasing donors
Building up credentials with the base
Pissing off the Muslims and giving an even clearer excuse to ban them
Politically isolating Israel from Europe
Forcing the Saudis to distance themselves from Israel
To gain leverage for a future nuclear deal with Iran
As part of upholding his end of the bargain for a past deal

Those are all the reasons I can think of
