Trump is a lot more influential than most people give him credit for. Clinton was a very difficult opponent to run against. She had brand name, the entire mainstream media conglomerate behind her, and held positions which polled strongly with the majority of American's (as opposed to someone like Bernie).

clinton was not a hard opponent in that climate, she was going to lose even if the repubs put a monkey on that stand.
