They got like $10 million in crowdfunding, or somesuch. They have tons of money

2018-10-29 03:00:29 UTC

i sure hope that 10 million can do something.

2018-10-29 03:02:18 UTC

is a web host that difficult to start up? with that cash and talent, i don't see why they couldn't just be a host themselves

2018-10-29 03:02:34 UTC

Yes, a DNS service is ungodly expensive.

2018-10-29 03:02:59 UTC

$10M expensive? 🤔

2018-10-29 03:03:08 UTC

triple, minimum.

2018-10-29 03:03:10 UTC

You basically need to buy an entire backbone's worth of infrastructure

2018-10-29 03:03:23 UTC

Closer to 10x @Asatru Artist - MD

2018-10-29 03:04:30 UTC

oof

2018-10-29 03:05:11 UTC

its pretty disheartening that these megacorps can destroy free speech like this

2018-10-29 03:05:14 UTC

The "guys" who got in the game in the early 90's are running a serious racket on DNS hosting across the internet backbone(s). You have to duplicate everything they've done both electronically and physically with hardlines to get it all to "work" together.

2018-10-29 03:05:19 UTC

in a blink of an eye

2018-10-29 03:05:55 UTC

@Phillip Wiglesworth - FL additionally new DNS services cannot be created, due to recent legistlation, if memory serves.

2018-10-29 03:06:12 UTC

Only the purchase and transfer of existing DNS registrars, no?

2018-10-29 03:07:44 UTC

I don't even want to try to imagine it. I just know how much of an issue it was back then when we complained about it, and the predictions obviously came true.

2018-10-29 03:09:49 UTC

@Papa Pizzagate “if you don’t like the rules, just create your own platform”

RIP freedom.

2018-10-29 03:10:40 UTC

There's tens of thousands of servers in just the USA alone that redirect domain names to a set few DNS hosts, which then redirect IP traffic to IP's based on what those domain names are registered to. Creating a new DNS host would be 100x the daunting task that "Y2K" created...for those of you familiar with that insanity we dealt with in the late 90's

2018-10-29 03:11:06 UTC

perhaps 10000x

2018-10-29 03:11:19 UTC

b/c the internet has grown exponentially since then

2018-10-29 03:12:02 UTC

Theoretically, the Right could have a pure FOS platform if they 1.owned their own Domain Registrar 2. owned their own bank or credit union, but even then CC companies (not processors, companies) could refuse to work with them.

2018-10-29 03:12:47 UTC

Notably, a few months ago Robert Spencer (not Richard) of ShariaWatch was denied CC processing through either Discover or Mastercard.

2018-10-29 03:14:14 UTC

In other words: "The Right" would have to create an entirely new financial backbone which operates on an entirely separate global internet backbone, recognized by every country of the world. It's just not possible with any amount of money thrown at it, so long as politics and media reject it

2018-10-29 03:15:46 UTC

This sort of thing should be opening people's eyes to the dangers of globalism, btw.

2018-10-29 03:16:07 UTC

@Papa Pizzagate Yeah, but, and not to wax nihilistic here, what good does it do to found all of the entities necessary for a FoS platform if there are anti-discrimination laws in the place that *guarantee* that parties likely to subvert it, too, will inevitably find their way into management...? 😑

2018-10-29 03:18:31 UTC

Just moaning to moan. Obviously, something does have to be done.

2018-10-29 03:19:21 UTC

What if we just make our own internet?

2018-10-29 03:19:23 UTC

@Logan it's honestly really weird how the magabomber, the shooting, Gab shut down happened all in the same week leading up to the midterms. It's extremely sketchy.

2018-10-29 03:19:35 UTC

🤔

2018-10-29 03:19:41 UTC

I think that would really alleviate all the issues we see tbh

2018-10-29 03:19:57 UTC

<:coolpepe:366743374105018368>

2018-10-29 03:20:39 UTC

Especially since gab was doing well with the support for bolsonaro and all that.

2018-10-29 03:20:51 UTC

Anyways...this DNS host discussion just reminds me of the theories about how the USA will come to a screeching halt: when we're attacked electronically by just merely taking down the few DNS hosting services.

2018-10-29 03:22:16 UTC

I doubt it would be that easy though

2018-10-29 03:22:18 UTC

tbh

2018-10-29 03:22:38 UTC

I went to the air force recruiter a couple weeks ago and they are really pushing for cyber people

2018-10-29 03:22:53 UTC

everything is connected to the internet, and very few people nowadays know how to use it without typing a domain name. They don't even know about how to use the internet by merely typing IP addresses.

2018-10-29 03:23:00 UTC

Hey guys . . I have an idea . . What if we eventually moved AWAY from the dependency of the internet and had on-the-ground connections so strong that we worried less and less about our platforms being broken? @Bjorn - MD @Phillip Wiglesworth - FL

2018-10-29 03:23:02 UTC

I don't really know anything about any of it, I just feel like it's not going to be super easy or fast for that to happen.

2018-10-29 03:23:17 UTC

Stop dividing the movement bro
