“I paid for college with a part time job. What’s wrong with you, kid?”

2018-11-20 02:12:13 UTC

Dude I have an uncle tht paid for his phd with part time summer jobs

2018-11-20 02:12:31 UTC

And of course hes a childless leftist fool

2018-11-20 02:13:47 UTC

@Alexander Pechorin That sounds like a good idea. I feel like my best option is to just finish my degree now that I'm here and have already put so much money into it, though.

2018-11-20 02:15:23 UTC

@Jacob how many years do you have left? 1 year out of college can move much faster and you’ll be surprised how much progress you can make. If you can get 2 years of extra work experience, it’s a huge deal. Of course, it depends on your goals.

2018-11-20 02:15:33 UTC

This year, and one more year

2018-11-20 02:16:08 UTC

@Jacob are you in a specialized comp sci program? Or a general one?

2018-11-20 02:16:43 UTC

What is a specialized program?

2018-11-20 02:16:53 UTC

@Jacob its a personal choice.
I had two years left when I quit, and those two years turned out to be the most important years of my life.

2018-11-20 02:17:14 UTC

Seems like you have to play it very carefully if you quit

2018-11-20 02:17:18 UTC

Could go wrong easily

2018-11-20 02:17:46 UTC

I think the risk is much higher staying. 2 years and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars is quite a bit.

2018-11-20 02:18:05 UTC

Vs 1 year where you try things out and then go back if you fail.

2018-11-20 02:18:32 UTC

My husband is going to school for engineering

2018-11-20 02:18:43 UTC

And I found nobody quite cared about my credential status. But it all depends on the career you want.

2018-11-20 02:19:08 UTC

Are colleges usually okay with gap years?

2018-11-20 02:19:14 UTC

Oh yes ^

2018-11-20 02:20:06 UTC

Interesting. I think my parents would be quite disappointed if I did that, though.

2018-11-20 02:20:16 UTC

Yes. Mine were as well for a while.

2018-11-20 02:20:24 UTC

I wouldn't really recommend a big tech programming career to anyone atm. Too much risk of getting replaced by an indian. Unless your company is small or is explicitly anti-h1b.

2018-11-20 02:20:29 UTC

Colleges love AmeriCorps and stuff. But AmeriCorps is very gay in the actual sense. Many converted to lesbianism there.

2018-11-20 02:21:03 UTC

But parents change when you prove them wrong.

2018-11-20 02:21:22 UTC

@Attrition in the desert I definitely don't want to work for Google, Amazon, Facebook, etc.

2018-11-20 02:21:35 UTC

A gap year is hardly something to be upset about though if you have a good plan in place.

2018-11-20 02:23:45 UTC

@Jacob but the stock options bro

2018-11-20 02:25:41 UTC

I wonder if we shouldn't be more vocal about things like environmentalism and worker protections.
