I read they got interrupted by someone during the beating, but it seems like a true assassination attempt would’ve been way better prepared. Maybe I’m expecting too much from people willing to do something as insane as this but still.

It doesn’t appear the cops termed it an assassination attempt, just AfD. He wasn’t leaving a political event, as far as the article specifies.
Until we know who the assailants are, anything is possible.
