Historical information is collected for network traffic dating back months, even years.It will for instance save all the traffic that took place on the entire companies network during November 3rd and 4th, between source and destination, IP Address, (different servers, between Frankfurt, Barcelona, Atlanta for instance). Time stamps, amount of data, in simple terms it stores every conversion of every system talking to every system over the companies global network.
