I usually don't buy gifts for Valentine's Day for my gf, outside of chocolate, but she'd got my a nice gift for Christmas so I thought I reciprocate and get her one today in return.
I'm also of a mindset that "Christmas isn't your birthday" and that you shouldn't expect a 2nd birthday of presents on Christmas.

I'm not big on gifts and me and my gf agree not to want/spend a lot when it comes to gifts ever. I just got her a gift for this Valentine's Day as a nice gesture, since she was talking about this perfume she wanted. She would have probably been happy just getting flowers, and I'd been alright just getting her flowers, but going the extra mile does matter to people, especially with women in these cases.

not all people, and therefore not all women, care for gifts. while our society has conditioned us to believe that such an act is equivalent to affection, it is definitely an illusion
Most people enjoy receiving gifts, which there is nothing wrong with. It is when people expect a gift, instead of appreciate them, that makes gift-giving toxic. I've gone out of my way to tell my gf straight-forward that I'm not spending a ton of money during the holidays, and she may not even get gifts for some of them. This is especially true in the future when we raise kids/want to raise them to not be material-driven/want to conserve money.
Woman generally aren’t as stoic in these matters as we are, it made my wife’s night that I got her a balloon, find the right girl and it really is the thought that counts imo
Ya my ex-girlfriend said I gave her the 'best v-day ever' and all I did was make her a nice dinner and bought flowers whilst at the grocery store. if ya girl gets mad that she didnt get some expensive gift, probably not a keeper imo
