@everyone Daily Question 🔖
Are multi-billion corporations such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple a threat to freedom of speech?
no lol
Not inherently
Only if they make themselves a threat
yes
The problem comes when those in power of the companies try to push their own political agenda using their company
yikes
I would say not directly
some companies such as facebook censor politics but that is because some groups are deadass deemed dangerous
Yes
They have already majorly interfered in politics and censored views
the internet is probably the most relevant and will practically be the only mainstream source of information in the next decade, so how they control information that is shared on the internet definitely has the capacity to threaten freedom of speech and they have demonstrated that they have no issue doing so, even if they have to manipulate the legal system
Yes and no
They have rights to do whatever they want on their services but as soon as they begin to expand outward and control other media then its a problem
Yes, particularly when they have deep connections with politicians and/or other foreign governments (see Google's censorship in China)
Depends on how much you value private property rights
It is not the corporations. It is the people. There are people who want to regulate speech. Corporations are just a tool.
Well corporations have to meet the demands of the market and ensure their profits
It is not profitable for Google to censor Conservatives.
Well, they aren't omniscient they go with what they *think* is the cultural trend, even if conservativism is dominant, especially on YouTube and in politics
Also it probably seems to the board of directors and such that being 'clean' is a safer bet than not
That is simply untrue. In that leaked video, it was clear that they are being driven by ideology. Moreover, have they not seen a single poll? Most Americans said that they hate political correctness but still they implemented live chat censor ship feature
I think it's incorrect to put ideology as a base motivator, if they do have an ideology which coincides with censorship of whatever form, then it must have a material basis which they benefit from
they aren't an inherent threat they just made themselves one due to their ownership of social media
I find it hard to believe that they don't see polls and current affairs. They can easily analyse their own data and see how many people like political correctness or transgenderism
It may not be able political correctness but keeping content that appeals to a lowest common denominator
