What's wrong with protectionism

2018-08-28 14:35:11 UTC

I'm wholly convinced you are a pathological liar.

2018-08-28 14:35:14 UTC

Someone inform me

2018-08-28 14:35:18 UTC

Protectionism is a net material negative.

2018-08-28 14:35:37 UTC

It's taxing cheaper goods. You subsidize uncompetitive industries with consumer dollars.

2018-08-28 14:36:05 UTC

Economically, protectionism doesn't work.

2018-08-28 14:36:13 UTC

From an economic standpoint it's laughable.

2018-08-28 14:36:23 UTC

Politically, it makes sense though

2018-08-28 14:36:32 UTC

It doesn't make sense for most countries.

2018-08-28 14:36:45 UTC

Like not even China could get away with it. They rely on North Korean coal.

2018-08-28 14:37:02 UTC

I like trump using it as a bully stick

2018-08-28 14:37:09 UTC

Most countries even if they have an abundance of raw resources don't have everything and still need to import luxury goods.

2018-08-28 14:37:15 UTC

Coffee and chocolate are good examples.

2018-08-28 14:37:48 UTC

Russia and America are the only examples I can think of that could get away with protectionism but the actual utility of it would be zilch.

2018-08-28 14:37:52 UTC

Autarky doesn't seem to work for countries that aren't massive in size.

2018-08-28 14:38:02 UTC

America especially because it's so connected to the world economy.

2018-08-28 14:38:24 UTC

Following the same train of thought, it makes sense protectionism wouldn't work either

2018-08-28 14:38:28 UTC

Trump is leveraging the economy to get fair trade as he calls it. He's not even a staunch protectionist.

2018-08-28 14:39:05 UTC

Like with the EU, revising post-WWII era trade deals that were meant to benefit Europe and get them back on their feet.

2018-08-28 14:39:21 UTC

Putting us on equal footing is what he regarded as fair trade.

2018-08-28 14:39:51 UTC

The only fair trade is free trade

2018-08-28 14:40:02 UTC

He's a bad diplomat though. He wants to handle everything.

2018-08-28 14:40:39 UTC

Oh my fucking G-d

2018-08-28 14:40:42 UTC

it depends on the economy

2018-08-28 14:40:52 UTC

France has benefited for decades from protectionism

2018-08-28 14:41:11 UTC

everything is black and white to you

2018-08-28 14:41:12 UTC

no nuance

2018-08-28 14:41:17 UTC

typical Catholic mush-brains

2018-08-28 14:41:49 UTC

France also benefited from dirigisme, but that's not a mainstream belief either.

2018-08-28 14:42:40 UTC

I know a guy who fooled an entire server into believing he had master's degree in econ but in actuality all he had done was read pop econ textbooks. The degree is toilet paper.

2018-08-28 14:42:46 UTC

They basically hand them out.

2018-08-28 14:43:02 UTC

You get one with the free pen.

2018-08-28 14:43:22 UTC

So did he or did he not have the degree?

2018-08-28 14:43:27 UTC

There has never been a time where a nation hasn't practiced some form of protectionism

2018-08-28 14:43:28 UTC

He did not.

2018-08-28 14:43:35 UTC

Protectionism is not economical, but it has it's benefits politically, giving it's people a sense of national pride by focusing on national production. While nearly impossible in practice, a country should move to be more and more self sufficient

2018-08-28 14:43:40 UTC

And mine is from a pretentious institution

2018-08-28 14:43:44 UTC

not from some State school

2018-08-28 14:44:03 UTC

Like institution, like graduate. <:hmmm:459545659972911114>

2018-08-28 14:44:14 UTC

I attended London School of Economics, an establishment that would never let you step across their threshold if you had seven lifetimes to try

2018-08-28 14:44:27 UTC

Yes, you repeat yourself.
