I think just for more clay

2018-04-09 13:52:49 UTC

They had plenty holdings in central Asia

2018-04-09 13:52:51 UTC

The Afghans overthrew the socialist government, so they retaliated with an invasion

2018-04-09 13:53:03 UTC

Maybe they wanted Naval Ports on the Indian Ocean

2018-04-09 13:53:04 UTC

They wanted more influence in the region

2018-04-09 13:53:24 UTC

Afghanistan offers a port to South Asia and the Middle East

2018-04-09 13:53:26 UTC

Wasn’t it because they were afraid of Islamic revolutions in their southern republics because they were Atheist?

2018-04-09 13:53:41 UTC

They were

2018-04-09 13:53:45 UTC

If I were them I'd be planning for an eventual railroad/ highway going from Moscow to the Indian Ocean

2018-04-09 13:53:54 UTC

The islamic governments were anti-communist to a large extent

2018-04-09 13:53:56 UTC

Like a forced version of their roads to Crimea

2018-04-09 13:54:13 UTC

Although Iran did have some backhanded cooperation with both sides

2018-04-09 13:54:57 UTC

Many of the secular MENA governments were socialist systems propped up by Soviets

2018-04-09 13:55:13 UTC

Libya, Iraq, Syria, etc

2018-04-09 13:55:18 UTC

Yeah

2018-04-09 13:55:42 UTC

In the fall of the cold war, those sort of governments are necessary to protect religious minorities

2018-04-09 13:55:43 UTC

Iraq went somewhat fundamentalist after the first gulf war

2018-04-09 13:55:54 UTC

And yea mostly

2018-04-09 13:56:03 UTC

Unfortunately, Conservative Inc hasn't learned that.

2018-04-09 13:56:12 UTC

There is a huge problem of Christians getting killed in the Middle East tho

2018-04-09 13:56:24 UTC

Yeah, of course.

2018-04-09 13:56:34 UTC

Reason u don't see more Arab Christians or Coptic Christian Egyptians is bc of such atrocities

2018-04-09 13:57:08 UTC

Yeah, islamic theocracies have a large tendency to force against christians in the ME

2018-04-09 13:57:35 UTC

That's the reason we need to keep Assad and why we should have kept Hussein and Gaddafi

2018-04-09 13:57:59 UTC

Even though Tribal religious tendencies are strong in even "monotheistic" African peoples .... a lot of the tension in Africa is Islam vs Christian

2018-04-09 13:58:10 UTC

Democracy does not work in the ME

2018-04-09 13:59:33 UTC

Tito helped reign in Yugoslavia, but unlike other socialist dictatorships in fractured regions Tito's regime didn't have a clearly established line of succession

2018-04-09 14:00:11 UTC

Succession is almost more important in these types of Govts than in Monarchies of old

2018-04-09 14:01:27 UTC

I hear most people in Saudi Arabia are on the govt dole and only a scarce few natives actually work

2018-04-09 14:01:49 UTC

Something like a 75% labor non participation rate if u include women iirc

2018-04-09 14:02:03 UTC

Or 50% if u look at men

2018-04-09 14:02:54 UTC

I don't think Socialist Monarchies are a long term solution ....

2018-04-09 14:03:31 UTC

But USA has had reason to be "allied" with several of these "Oil socialist" nations.

2018-04-09 14:04:07 UTC

Especially after Soviet Union fell

2018-04-09 14:04:44 UTC

Democracy in ME almost always goes to Islamic Theocracy it's just a fact.

2018-04-09 14:05:08 UTC

That fear stopped Bush Sr from finishing the job in the first gulf war ...

2018-04-09 14:05:14 UTC

But that was a huge mistake

2018-04-09 14:05:44 UTC

He should have kept going in first gulf war and oversaw some sort of power transfer

2018-04-09 14:06:17 UTC

His withdrawal hurt the Kurdish people, in the tens of thousands iirc

2018-04-09 14:08:09 UTC

Long story short ... Middle East needs fair and free market economies .... imho. One step towards this would be to clear all global debts of IMF and World Bank

2018-04-09 14:08:21 UTC

This would help out both MENA nations and Mexico
