propellers are moving air around to create lift

2018-10-16 05:54:04 UTC

yes

2018-10-16 05:54:06 UTC

or propel a submarine in water

2018-10-16 05:54:10 UTC

the usually pull the aircraft through the air

2018-10-16 05:54:15 UTC

because it has a medium to push

2018-10-16 05:54:31 UTC

they aren't going to work in a vacuum either

2018-10-16 05:54:45 UTC

because there is no medium

2018-10-16 05:54:47 UTC

a prollor on a ship pushes the water

2018-10-16 05:54:51 UTC

exactly

2018-10-16 05:54:52 UTC

yep

2018-10-16 05:54:54 UTC

well, rockets use a different way to propel themselves

2018-10-16 05:55:20 UTC

not significantly different enough to push itself in a vacuum

2018-10-16 05:55:24 UTC

a propeller requires a medium to push in order to create lift

2018-10-16 05:55:37 UTC

you need to be traveling by some other method, like light sails or something that works in that medium

2018-10-16 05:55:49 UTC

you know that flies cannot fly in a vacuum

2018-10-16 05:55:55 UTC

when you eject alot of stuff very quickly through a small area is creates thrust

2018-10-16 05:55:58 UTC

someone put flies in a vacuum and tested it

2018-10-16 05:56:03 UTC

it didnt fly

2018-10-16 05:56:04 UTC

🍿

2018-10-16 05:56:24 UTC

appearantly they can survive but they cannot fly without enough atmosphere

2018-10-16 05:56:31 UTC

rockets dont use wings or propellors though

2018-10-16 05:56:52 UTC

its a 3rd way to generate kinetic energy

2018-10-16 05:56:58 UTC

rockets have some stabalizors

2018-10-16 05:57:17 UTC

they aren't flapping wings though which would create lift

2018-10-16 05:57:40 UTC

...

2018-10-16 05:58:00 UTC

we can't survive in a vacuum too

2018-10-16 05:58:12 UTC

mind if i do a quick run through on rockets and you tell me what you find wrong kevin?

2018-10-16 05:58:20 UTC

go ahead

2018-10-16 05:58:23 UTC

alright

2018-10-16 05:58:41 UTC

we know how propellers work, by pushing air or another medium

2018-10-16 05:58:51 UTC

but rockets use a different method to generate thrust

2018-10-16 05:59:34 UTC

they do this by ejecting extremely hot pressurized gasses through a small opening

2018-10-16 06:00:13 UTC

the reason it goes through the small opening is so it has a higher pressure inside the fuel tank

2018-10-16 06:00:30 UTC

which in turn ejects the material extremely fast outward

2018-10-16 06:02:07 UTC

now, newtons's 3rd law states any reaction has an equal and opposite reaction, meaning when the gasses are ejected backward, the rocket is ejected forward. once the gas leaves the nozzle its useless and serves no other purpose.

2018-10-16 06:03:14 UTC

welcome to reality

2018-10-16 06:03:24 UTC

air only slows rockets down because of air resistance, in a vacuum the gasses would eject faster and there would be no air resistance, only helping the rocket

2018-10-16 06:04:14 UTC

any problems you've thought of?

2018-10-16 06:04:30 UTC

yes, rockets need something to push off of

2018-10-16 06:04:35 UTC

its a propellant
