I always wondered why they would have to kill a baby to save the mother. Never made sense.

It is nearly impossible to carry an ectopic pregnancy to term, as this kind of pregnancy almost always results in massive internal bleeding due to ruptured organs.
So this is a case in which it is necessary to have an abortion to save the mother's life.

@gohan A Fallopian tube pregnancy will kill the mother quite early in her term. The mother would never make it to late term pregnancy. Reread my post.
@The Gwench I was referring more to what Z said. Late term abortions don't make too much sense, but ectopic pregnancies *are* an example of when abortions are medically necessary
