There was an article in The American Journal of Human Genetics from 2008 by Russian and Estonian geneticists about Russian genetic composition. It says Russian are essentially divided in two groups: Southern are a bit genetically closer to southern Slavs, Northern are a bit closer to Finno-Ugric peoples.
