Hi there,
Did you vote in the last election? If you did, count yourself lucky! Itโs not so easy for a lot of people.
While many Western minds assume that only other nations face serious political unrest and a lack of voting rights, swathes of US citizens, too, continue to struggle to have their voices heard.
Voting has become harder for many Americans
After the 2000 US election, which saw alarming numbers of inaccurately counted votes, certain states decided to clamp down on voter fraud, despite studies that showed voter fraud to be exceedingly rare.
Consequently, some states, like Indiana, demanded voters show photo ID to cast their ballot. This was carried out even though only two instances of voter fraud had been recorded there since 1868!
Though seemingly neutral, this law disproportionately affected African-Americans, who are three times less likely to hold a photo ID. In addition, getting an ID can be costly, which makes it especially hard for poor people to vote.
Unfortunately, this trend continues. Nineteen states have imposed tighter restrictions on voting since 2010.
