Basically Catalonia considers themselves a separate region from Spain with different culture and they want statehood

That and they want to be separated to deal with their own affairs

It's complicated. Catalonia has always been part of Spain, but it's now that they want to separate for cultural reasons (which isn't significant because they both have similar culture) and Catalonians have been rlly violent about it

Spain's refused some of Catalonia's demands like more government representation

Spain handled it poorly and that's why Catalonia's referendum is successful
