I think I've only ever bought 2-3 games by EA many years ago (one was less than a dollar but didn't even work)

Agreed, however I think it is something that needs to be adressed. The gaming industry is becoming nothing but a gambling simulator.
If devs need a steady flow of income I don't think lootboxes are the answer in a already 60$ game. It devalues that initial purchase because you didn't get the "full experience" DLC and expansion passes already do this.
If devs are needing to make up for production costs to make a profit they really should consider downsizing the production costs and using tricks that would bring that down. Most of the games that have been coming out have been sloppily put together and always need patches. It seems more like they need to get more skilled and competant within their process, more than anything else.
Whoops our game got stuck in development hell so we spent millions instead of finding a better process to avoid things like that, make it less likly to happen or even lesson it's effects.
Game design is like all other design it needs to improve and innovate otherwise it will not be sustanable and will continuelly die off then be brought back from the dead
