The closest thing l can think of that most resembles segregation-era treatment of blacks is Rodney King's beating by LAPD in 1991.

2018-09-23 18:15:18 UTC

for one thing, the 1875 act didn't even do anything. Nobody ever bothered to enforce it.

2018-09-23 18:16:40 UTC

@Fred the Fish do you think whites should pay reparations for slavery and racism of the past

2018-09-23 18:16:42 UTC

the other thing is that you don't need a mentality to justify overturning it, show me where in the 14th Amendment Congress is given the power to regulate private discrimination

2018-09-23 18:17:06 UTC

Mord is right, the racism that exists today is nowhere near the level of the racism that existed 50 years ago

2018-09-23 18:17:52 UTC

there's obviously still a negative legacy from segregation, but it's diminishing as time goes on

2018-09-23 18:17:59 UTC

what kind of legislation do you even want to reduce it even further

2018-09-23 18:18:57 UTC

@agag segregation of whites

2018-09-23 18:19:26 UTC

yeah lol we need to protect black communities from gentrification

2018-09-23 18:19:34 UTC

let's stop wypipo from moving into their communities

2018-09-23 18:20:12 UTC

l mean on some college campuses the minority students have advocated for certain dorm areas to be only people of color

2018-09-23 18:20:17 UTC

that's segregation

2018-09-23 18:20:53 UTC

yeah I don't know how they don't realize the contradiction

2018-09-23 18:31:10 UTC

@Fred the Fish do you think that we should be paying reparations for any injustice Black people have endured against white people? You’re playing an idealistic game that isn’t possible

2018-09-23 18:31:57 UTC

Surely if you throw money at something it goes away and solves the problem once and for all

2018-09-23 18:32:09 UTC

Yea totally

2018-09-23 18:32:47 UTC

yeah we know we can't just free blacks from slavery and expect things to get better

2018-09-23 18:32:53 UTC

that's why we passed Civil Rights legislation in the 60s

2018-09-23 18:33:04 UTC

lf the government suddenly decided to write a 1 million dollar check to every black person in the US, in the 10 years not only would all that money be spent on material things, they would come around and say it wasn't enough and we'd be back to square one.

2018-09-23 18:33:16 UTC

Exactly

2018-09-23 18:33:32 UTC

I have seen people value reparations at $5 trillion

2018-09-23 18:33:39 UTC

it is a pipedream and always will be

2018-09-23 18:33:52 UTC

for *each* black person? @agag

2018-09-23 18:33:56 UTC

or collecvtively?

2018-09-23 18:34:00 UTC

no collectively

2018-09-23 18:34:03 UTC

Oh

2018-09-23 18:34:07 UTC

like $380k each

2018-09-23 18:34:09 UTC

If you are half black do you pay your reparations to yourself?

2018-09-23 18:34:36 UTC

150k would be for the same guys low estimate

2018-09-23 18:34:40 UTC

l'm contemplating on pinning that

2018-09-23 18:35:39 UTC

who has to pay reparations anyway

2018-09-23 18:35:54 UTC

do Asians or Hispanics who weren't in this country when slavery existed have to pay reparations?

2018-09-23 18:36:04 UTC

do whites whose ancestors never owned slaves have to pay reparations?

2018-09-23 18:36:16 UTC

do Native Americans whose ancestors did own slaves have to pay reparations?

2018-09-23 18:36:23 UTC

you would have to trace back all the white ancestors who owned slaves

2018-09-23 18:36:28 UTC

and it wasn't just whites

2018-09-23 18:36:32 UTC

does Puerto Rico have to pay reparations since they don't pay federal income tax?

2018-09-23 18:36:43 UTC

lt was jews, native americans, other blacks, etc..

2018-09-23 18:36:51 UTC

So nobody

2018-09-23 18:36:54 UTC

so the American people as a whole?
