The reason people believe earth is flat is because theres no apparent curve, well that's because the size of the earth is **so** large, that it *appears* flat because it's not small enough for you to see the curve

except when you see a ship go over it?

then suddenly it's small enough

Your eyes can see the ship much better then a slight decline.
