a) When they first started to fake space they agreed starfields were too hard to figure out so they decided to do no star field for simplicity sake
b) They really do go to space but stars are invisible, you're either above the stars or stars are quantum tunelled into the atmosphere
c) The official verdict is true, they really do go to space and you can't see stars in space because of exposure.
