@GingaBomber this is a better example for Guns vs Melee :P

But... Musket lines

2018-04-02 14:56:06 UTC

And sexy british uniforms

2018-04-02 14:58:07 UTC

bit of a one-sided fight that 1h clip is 😛

2018-04-02 14:58:33 UTC

Eh, so was the war

2018-04-02 14:59:28 UTC

Well, zulus lost almost 7k vs 2k europeans.

2018-04-02 15:00:00 UTC

Then again, might have a point, europeans would retreat earlier.

2018-04-02 15:03:40 UTC

Still thoguh balance wise, sure, you have cannons, and musketlines, but youd encounter waves of a 100 at once. They will drop like flies, but once they get close, your firing line is screwed.

2018-04-02 15:05:14 UTC

true, though in most cases they wouldn't all just stand undefended they'd have ways to keep the people on distance
walls, dem spike barriers, pits etc

2018-04-02 15:06:13 UTC

Im talking the game tho.

2018-04-02 15:06:23 UTC

IRL, well, they had volley fire formation.

2018-04-02 15:06:39 UTC

Had some fortified positions that funneled the zulus.

2018-04-02 15:06:45 UTC

yeah

2018-04-02 15:07:32 UTC

I like the volley fire formation. Pike and shot period to shot and bayonet period has to be my fourth favourite moment in war

2018-04-02 15:07:43 UTC

When it comes to war history

2018-04-02 15:08:07 UTC

Worst thing to hear in this mod? Your commander yelling "affix bayonets"

2018-04-02 15:08:20 UTC

haha

2018-04-02 15:08:58 UTC

Well, cause spears are actually better than bayonets. In close range. Rifles wernt long enough to be used as conventional spears that time.

2018-04-02 15:09:04 UTC

I mean whys that?

2018-04-02 15:10:36 UTC

for the non-spear people i'd imagine?

2018-04-02 15:11:07 UTC

Well, spears were better than swords in general

2018-04-02 15:11:25 UTC

yeah

2018-04-02 15:11:54 UTC

but i always figured bayonets were for a last moment stab when you're still shooting and don't have time to draw another weapon

2018-04-02 15:12:28 UTC

well, with fire rates that slow, youd only get one chance in close range.

2018-04-02 15:13:08 UTC

So you switch to a melee range. A bayonet just happened to be the most cost effective way to get everyone cheap bladed close range weapons.

2018-04-02 15:13:23 UTC

Unlike calvary that would get cutlasses.

2018-04-02 15:13:40 UTC

Like what? Club them to death with the stock?

2018-04-02 15:13:47 UTC

well if you're on your own yes, but wouldn't you get a bit more time to reload when your squad fires too?

2018-04-02 15:14:13 UTC

Well, unless you have some form of volley fire.

2018-04-02 15:14:30 UTC

Thats an issue.

2018-04-02 15:14:50 UTC

Also, if you are firing alone, you are already doing something terribly wrong.

2018-04-02 15:15:19 UTC

maybe you're Chuck Colonorrist?

2018-04-02 15:15:20 UTC

I mean, those muskets create so much smoke that the field is a mist after a half dozen volleys.

2018-04-02 15:15:37 UTC

And you only have enough time to fire a few times.

2018-04-02 15:16:06 UTC

Not sure how common melee ended up, but it was understood that you either shot from afar with a unit, or were close up in their faces.

2018-04-02 15:16:52 UTC

makes sense yeah

2018-04-02 15:16:58 UTC

With bayonets.

2018-04-02 15:17:34 UTC

Like said, just happens to be the nuance of the period. Ranged weapons with innate armor piercing simply made metal armor obsolete.

2018-04-02 15:18:20 UTC

One shot + a canister of cotton and gunpowder is easier to transport than arrows/crossbows despite both being more accurate than shot.

2018-04-02 15:18:57 UTC

Bayonets + pistols for close range. Since shots take so goddamn long to reload and fire.

2018-04-02 15:23:42 UTC

maybe africa should demand a rematch
