For some reason, this reminds me of Seattle raising it's minimum to $15, causing many of the businesses to shut down, leave, or automate.

2018-01-20 20:58:42 UTC

what makes these types of lawmakers think that businesses who run on razer-thin margins in many industries are able to survive without passing the costs on to their customers

2018-01-20 20:59:39 UTC

^ this is the result of that type of thinking

2018-01-20 21:00:45 UTC

Bigger businesses don't get too hurt, since again, they can just leave or automate. Smaller business and smaller/local shops, though, just can't function or keep up.

2018-01-20 21:01:50 UTC

the problem is those small businesses employ the most people

That's one of the big arguments behind the Fair Tax proposal. Make everything a retail-level sales tax because big companies just pass their tax costs on to their customers anyways.

2018-01-20 21:02:19 UTC

I sort of agree

2018-01-20 21:02:26 UTC

but sales tax hurts the poor more than the rich

2018-01-20 21:02:27 UTC

I don't know if the Fair Tax proposal would actually work, but that's the premise they push

2018-01-20 21:03:00 UTC

I think property tax would be a better way to go

2018-01-20 21:03:13 UTC

because housing value typically is lockstep with income and/or wealth

2018-01-20 21:03:21 UTC

Usually, but not always

2018-01-20 21:03:32 UTC

Sometimes really wealthy peopele choose not to have a lot of property

2018-01-20 21:03:53 UTC

oh I agree, some very rich people live meager lives

2018-01-20 21:04:13 UTC

I'm actually ok with a straight up flat tax on income

2018-01-20 21:04:16 UTC

or something

2018-01-20 21:04:17 UTC

I know I would if I had money. lol

2018-01-20 21:04:35 UTC

if I dind't have a family, I'd probalby live in an RV on the beach

2018-01-20 21:05:07 UTC

I don't like the idea of living in an RV, but the beach would be nice

2018-01-20 21:05:19 UTC

lol why not?

2018-01-20 21:05:24 UTC

have you seen modern rvs

2018-01-20 21:05:29 UTC

I have

2018-01-20 21:05:40 UTC

they're right up there with my hosue in some areas

2018-01-20 21:05:41 UTC

The ones that I would want cost more than a small house a lot of the time

2018-01-20 21:05:54 UTC

eh, jsut buy a recent used model

2018-01-20 21:06:04 UTC

let some other poor soul eat the depreciation 😄

2018-01-20 21:06:35 UTC

I could live in that, I think

2018-01-20 21:08:56 UTC

I remember reading an article shortly after I moved to Maine for my first job about a guy who got hired at Google, bought a moving truck, and renovated the back of that into a basic living quarters. He basically just parked in the Google lot full time and used their gym facilities for showering, etc.

2018-01-20 21:09:13 UTC

He spent something like 8-12K up front and saved on rent costs in the long run

2018-01-20 21:10:55 UTC

yup

2018-01-20 21:11:25 UTC

with rent you're just paying someone else

2018-01-20 21:12:05 UTC

I mean I get it's not as socially acceptable to live in an rv vs an apartment, but I just view that as throwing away money

2018-01-20 21:12:14 UTC

wew new tim pool vid

2018-01-20 21:12:34 UTC

2018-01-20 21:13:49 UTC
