everyone has a reason.

but if genes if a reason and you have children, the only way to keep your genes alive beyond your death, then being altruistic to those younger than you makes sense as their bodies will be better suited to keeping your children alive than yours. This only becomes more important the older you get.

Else they become dependent, and then can't survive without you

and since they dont need it in the first place for altruism to be beneficial, it doesnt work

its interesting the similarities with 1984, except with the opposite viewpoint... like obrien says I dont want to force you to do this, I want you to want to "be a good citizen" kinda thing... but in Utopia its more about all the Utopians rather than a specific character... but the way it describes things... like "everyone can go to bed whenever they want, but they all want to go to bed at a reasonable time".. the idea of Utopia seems to be a place where everyone just thinks the same

also utopia seems to have slavery 😛 .. but I guess it was written in the 1500's so...

but on the 1984 thing... its like with 1984, its written with the idea of "this is a bad thing".. and with Utopia its written with the idea of "this is a good thing"
