Wrong maintenance was the problem IIRC

that was after the buffer issue was resolved

We had better equipment, better training(less so for the drafters), better strategies

the first versions of the m16 actually had issues with the buffer tubes once the m14 were nearly phased out they went and fixed that issue

the US was in a better position overall strategically and logistically speaking, but there was no point for the war to continue, it was obvious viet's didn't want them there and even if they won and managed to occupy vietnam it would cost too much to maintain their presence.

And that too, USSR realised America would go to the wall.
