Especialy when public money are involved

2018-06-02 23:24:22 UTC

The core problem with term limits is that it creates a political class

2018-06-02 23:24:56 UTC

Incumbency doesn't just happen because someone's doing a good job

2018-06-02 23:25:07 UTC

I'd also institute Single Transferrable Vote, if people want to keep the districts.

2018-06-02 23:25:53 UTC

It happens in large part due to apathy.

2018-06-02 23:26:55 UTC

And the lack of viable third parties is due to the fact that the first-past-the-post voting system used actively works against the growth of said third parties.

2018-06-02 23:27:05 UTC

Mmhmm

2018-06-02 23:27:36 UTC

The way it works, not voting for a republican or democrat is essentially a vote for the other party

2018-06-02 23:27:37 UTC

Yep

2018-06-02 23:27:44 UTC

Exactly.

2018-06-02 23:27:44 UTC

And actually swapping parties is two votes for that party.

2018-06-02 23:28:15 UTC

Two party system sucks

2018-06-02 23:28:16 UTC

The only way a third party can be viable is if they manage to, on their very first go, manage to win.

2018-06-02 23:28:41 UTC

it *can* happen

2018-06-02 23:28:49 UTC

but yeah

2018-06-02 23:29:00 UTC

Yeah it kind of did happen in gb

2018-06-02 23:29:05 UTC

@Somi to prevent a government position being seen as a reward maybe we should stick 'em in a barracks and feed them only cafeteria food.

2018-06-02 23:29:10 UTC

With liberal Democrats

2018-06-02 23:29:15 UTC

At one point

2018-06-02 23:29:22 UTC

And in that case, they'd simply replace either of the two original parties in the long term.

2018-06-02 23:30:02 UTC

I ahte this line of arguement that a vote for a third is vote for the other. How do you think the UK got their Brexit ref? It was coz of the growth in votes for UKIP. Everyone that voted for them knew they would never win but the message was sent. Politics is a long game.

2018-06-02 23:30:18 UTC

It's simply a matter of fact that that's the case, Poppy.

2018-06-02 23:30:28 UTC

It is, in the US.

2018-06-02 23:30:36 UTC

It's called the spoiler effect, look it up. It's a problem inherent to the first-past-the-post voting system.

2018-06-02 23:30:46 UTC

Yup.

2018-06-02 23:31:57 UTC

Here, CGP Grey did a video about the problems with the system

2018-06-02 23:32:15 UTC

good ol' CGP

2018-06-02 23:33:46 UTC

Well in us

2018-06-02 23:34:17 UTC

You have bernie and progressive wave comming

2018-06-02 23:34:32 UTC

I'm not certain we do.

2018-06-02 23:34:35 UTC

I wonder how big splash it will make in the end

2018-06-02 23:35:18 UTC

Participation in Republican primaries absolutely swept away democrat participation in most areas

2018-06-02 23:35:27 UTC

RyeCast, I wouldn't underestimate the JD

2018-06-02 23:35:42 UTC

JD?

2018-06-02 23:35:54 UTC

Justice Democrats.

2018-06-02 23:38:36 UTC

ugh, that's a doublespeak name if ever I've seen one.

2018-06-02 23:39:38 UTC

Lol

2018-06-02 23:39:43 UTC

Agreed

2018-06-02 23:40:03 UTC

But i would not underestimate them

2018-06-02 23:40:11 UTC

thank Kyle Kulinskie for it. Super hero movies were big at the time 😉
