All the major media personalities all got together online and coordinated their stories to have the same narrative. That made it seem like everybody believed the same thing even though it was only a few dozen connected people with a big platform. Since it seemed like the consensus, it *became* the consensus because joe average regular guy doesn't want to be on the fringe. He wants to be in the middle where it's safe and non-controversial.

Journolist got leaked though, because it was amateur hour. Journalists weren't exactly tech savvy back then.

And a mailing list isn't exactly secure comms.

They didn't stop of course. They just got more sophisticated.

I'd love to hear what Tim has to say on this. No doubt he wouldn't want to talk about it on an open forum though.

It's applied psychology. People want to conform to a group. Peer pressure. Everybody else is smoking, so you take a puff to be social.

Except with media you can't get an accurate picture of the size of the group or what everybody else is actually doing. You can only get a perception.

And that perception can be crafted to yield a desired effect.
