Free speech is up to the public, ultimately

2018-10-26 15:05:50 UTC

Free speech was ok before, as the "people" had no megaphone, so could be tolerated. This is no longer true.

2018-10-26 15:07:37 UTC

Again, free speech is only up to the government if the American people allow it. The point of the setup is that the government promises not to interfere with the public on [List of Rights Here] and in return the public does not attempt to forcibly overthrow them

2018-10-26 15:10:18 UTC

Yours and my opinions don't matter. Governments can not allow people on megaphones to sway public opinions. This was previously done by selected journalists that could help control the narrative. They have lost control ... they need to get it back, regardless of whether it is right or wrong.

2018-10-26 15:11:53 UTC

The EU understands this and is quickly silencing the megaphones.

2018-10-26 15:12:02 UTC

It's not a matter of opinion. That's why the US system works the way it does

2018-10-26 15:12:22 UTC

EU citizens have no reliable method of fighting back, US citizens do

2018-10-26 15:12:27 UTC

I am so naive

2018-10-26 15:12:53 UTC

I'm 47 years old so I very well remember life before ubiquitous internet

2018-10-26 15:13:05 UTC

I cut my teeth on Fidonet

2018-10-26 15:13:15 UTC

US citizens will soon loose this. It is inevitable. Please note that I am just saying what will happen, not that I agree with it.

2018-10-26 15:13:42 UTC

I remember watching Tianenmen Square happen in near real time from reports at the source.

2018-10-26 15:14:11 UTC

I was a child pre broadband

@TraderPropShop then the US citizenry has allowed it to happen

2018-10-26 15:14:24 UTC

I honestly thought the internet would bring us all together since we'd all have access to the same information and could all talk it out in one big forum.

2018-10-26 15:15:15 UTC

The internet is too powerful of a tool for the common people, governments will have to curb it or anarchy will come - there justification of course.

2018-10-26 15:15:33 UTC

Again, not saying I agree.

2018-10-26 15:15:41 UTC

Just what will happen.

2018-10-26 15:15:56 UTC

I don't buy that dichotomy tbh

2018-10-26 15:15:59 UTC

But instead of people taking all this information and forming similar conclusions. People instead took thier conclusions and formed similar information.

2018-10-26 15:16:25 UTC

It is just my prediction, it is already happening.

2018-10-26 15:16:41 UTC

I'm still feeling gobsmacked at how it happened this way

2018-10-26 15:16:52 UTC

People were consolidating power pre-internet my dude

2018-10-26 15:17:35 UTC

If you allow people to accumulate power, they will attempt to. If you allow them to step over you to do so, they will

2018-10-26 15:18:26 UTC

Congress will never allow free "megaphone" speech. They will say it is crying fire in a theater.

2018-10-26 15:18:28 UTC

In 1946 veterans liberated a ballot box in TN with weapons that had just been used, en masse, in the recent world war. Today you cannot own a modern automatic as a civilian

2018-10-26 15:18:39 UTC

Fire in a crowded theatre isn't a legal precedent

2018-10-26 15:18:51 UTC

It was struck down forty years ago, approx.

2018-10-26 15:19:23 UTC

And it's another example of govt consolidation of power

2018-10-26 15:19:42 UTC

Every new bit of tech we get "ruins everything" in some other sector until we get used to it

2018-10-26 15:19:49 UTC

You can wish all you want, this control of "megaphone" speech will happen. Sorry to say....

2018-10-26 15:20:14 UTC

>if I just repeat my alarmism it makes it true

2018-10-26 15:21:13 UTC

I think what keeps that happening is the fact the US is so evenly split down the middle that no one can agree on what speech to discourage

2018-10-26 15:21:22 UTC

No alarmism, people will freely accept it, EU is ... so will the US. You will be a racist if you don't.

2018-10-26 15:21:58 UTC

I think we're seeing in the US just how successful that would be

2018-10-26 15:22:08 UTC

Not very

2018-10-26 15:23:02 UTC

Sure a few like Tim Pool are calling it out ... he soon will be banned. You will be posting your comments into the "shadow banned" ether.

2018-10-26 15:23:09 UTC

The president of the United States is essentially wearing the badge racist as an honor...and therefore essentially denying such a thing exists anymore

2018-10-26 15:24:05 UTC

Whether you agree it does or not is another matter, but that he is killing the term is pretty evident

2018-10-26 15:25:51 UTC

Now we wait, while they clean the social media imprint before name is released.
