So on an idea in response to the covington fiasco, and how to make journalists more accountable: lets take away the tax-free airwaves from MSM. They were supposed to be providing a service by keeping people informed and have instead gone for ratings. Lets legislate that all news COMMENTARY be clearly labeled and displayed as such to separate it from the news. Either that or somehow elevate actual journalists so it's easier to separate fact from opinion.(edited)
The idea from what I remember was that the news were providing a service by informing the people, so they got a special tax exempt status.
They've become increasingly commercial.
just ban them from every government press conference
So basically like every authoritarian country?
why?
any responsible news outlet can attend, but not unresponsible ones
Just for sake of curiosity, how would you define 'responsible'?
where's the bar? next time a "lee harvey oswald" just says he is a journalist, and now he can enter every government press conference?
have an error rate lower than X
But then how does one determine an error rate? Keep in mind that in this hyper speed age; people rush in on a story and bound to make errors
that's the problem
how does the government decide on who may send journalists to their pressconferences now
i don't consider every mistake a real grave mistake. like reporting that 4 people died in a school shooting, when it was only 3, in the first minutes, is normal.
not watching a video, and pushing your own agenda, is clearly a violation of what journalism is.
and i'm pretty sure that the government would be allowed to never hold a press conference for the next 2 years. that has nothing to do with an authoritarian regime. journalists could still do their work. but the government is not constrained to do X press briefings each week.
silencing journalists is what authoritarians do
@Ace K banning press from a press conference is much much different from making it illegal for them to report on anything. It does prevent them from asking questions at the conference but that is no different than the White House just making a statement.
If anything, the press is most likely not going to get anything but propaganda from a press conference.
yeah. nobody can force someone to answer questions.
i'd ban every cnn (and similar) journalist from press briefings
but handout every open seat to a proper journalist
