“ STDs in LA county are skyrocketing. Officials think racism and stigma may be to blame” by Soumya Karlamangla on L.A Time Los Angeles Times

Officials in California rejected the theory that their rising STDs are a result of hook up culture and not using condoms. They’ve decided it’s racism, and have a program teaching children to treat dicks like a game of hot potato.

It's kind of a meta thing.

2018-07-18 17:17:30 UTC

It's not that the advertisement is an advertisement, that they're trying to sell a product, it's that they missed an opportunity at accuracy for a grandiose angle.

2018-07-18 17:18:10 UTC

It's that one word swap that gets me. Using the word Why where the word How would be more accurate to their product.

2018-07-18 17:18:27 UTC

The power of one word in a message.

2018-07-18 17:41:23 UTC

or how about the fact they made knowingly giving a partner an STD no longer a crime?

2018-07-18 17:41:43 UTC

also how tf is it racism?!

2018-07-18 17:41:55 UTC

people choosing to have sex with other people is racism?!

2018-07-18 17:41:59 UTC

Did they make it no longer a crime

2018-07-18 17:42:02 UTC

or no longer a felony?

2018-07-18 17:42:13 UTC

might have been no longer a felony

2018-07-18 17:42:27 UTC

in their attempt to lower crime by not having anything be illegal

2018-07-18 17:42:53 UTC

so now instead of these people being in jail, they get a fine and are allowed to go spread STDs intentionally all day long

2018-07-18 17:43:22 UTC

Its a misdemenor now

2018-07-18 17:43:30 UTC

So its still a crime, just not so serious

2018-07-18 17:43:57 UTC

I liked Tim's point the other day, highlighting the conflicting narratives that we should abolish borders, but also Israel is occupying Palestine

2018-07-18 17:43:59 UTC

i'm sorry but knowingly endangering someones life is felony assault and battery

2018-07-18 17:44:44 UTC

It's basically equal to acid attacks.

2018-07-18 17:45:09 UTC

I'd rather die in the street after 10 minutes of suffering than live as an acid attack victim.

2018-07-18 17:45:52 UTC

well, i guess depends on the STD. Something easily treated with antibiotics and goes away probably shouldn't be a felony.

2018-07-18 17:46:01 UTC

but the ones that require treatment for life?

2018-07-18 17:46:08 UTC

how is that not a felony?

2018-07-18 17:46:32 UTC

How is the cost of that treatment not 100% attributed to the person that caused it?

2018-07-18 17:46:43 UTC

On the other hand

2018-07-18 17:46:52 UTC

it can always be turned around

2018-07-18 17:46:59 UTC

It’s not a felony any more.

2018-07-18 17:47:01 UTC

thats still not a felony, its just they have to pay for treatment

2018-07-18 17:47:09 UTC

but if i hit someone so hard with no reason that it caused them to have to permanently change their life style for medical reasons, yeah, i'm going to jail.

2018-07-18 17:47:29 UTC

I wouldn't make a distiction between the different STDs. You don't know what effect it's going to have in the specific person.

2018-07-18 17:47:42 UTC

I’m just waiting for super AIDS to evolve out of California.

2018-07-18 17:48:12 UTC

A strand of AIDS that doesn't respond to treatment.

2018-07-18 17:48:16 UTC

*shudder*

2018-07-18 17:48:18 UTC

@angeryer if i punch someone, the difference between a simple battery charge and felony battery charge could depend on where they hit their head

2018-07-18 17:48:44 UTC

so i would make a distinction on the results

2018-07-18 17:48:49 UTC

that's cut and dry, though.

2018-07-18 17:48:53 UTC

You took a swing at someone

2018-07-18 17:48:57 UTC

they got hit

2018-07-18 17:48:58 UTC

assault

2018-07-18 17:48:59 UTC

battery

2018-07-18 17:49:02 UTC

jail

2018-07-18 17:49:03 UTC

bye
