Yeah, I'm curious how the results would've changed were it worded differently. I'm not proud to be an American. I did nothing to gain that title.
I am thankful to be an American, proud of America itself, and proud to do my best to uphold the foundational American principles, but not proud simply to live where I do.

Being an American has an identity

It's the same thing as "Proud to be black/white/gay/trans/woman/handicapped"

Personally I find it weird to be proud of the colour of your skin, or of who you want to fuck. But at the same time, if it's acceptable to be proud of being black, it should be just as acceptable to be proud of being white. If you can be proud of being gay, it should be just as acceptable to be proud of being straight.

Except American encompasses values

And skin color or sexuality less so

I think they're all kind of silly to be proud of. Be proud to be who you are and include those bits of who you are, but being proud of those descriptors makes it seem like you have little of substance to be proud of.

Instead, not only can you not be proud of being white, it's not even acceptable to think that it's merely OK to be white.

I'd say you can be proud of the people who put in the work that gave you rights, but not necessarily of the traits themselves

Simply being an American doesn't mean those values are inherent in yourself. Be proud of the values you hold; not the label.

I see being proud of your sexuality and race as just not being ashamed but to each there own

I think nationalism to some extent is a good thing. But only when it's centered around what makes your nation great. To simply say 'we're great because we're us' risks losing sight of those values.

I can agree with that. I just think that the wording used to describe it is very important so that the important nuances don't fall by the wayside
