It's metaphysical entropy

2018-07-04 22:41:41 UTC

Or memetic entropy

2018-07-04 22:42:02 UTC

Yeah, I'm curious how the results would've changed were it worded differently. I'm not proud to be an American. I did nothing to gain that title.
I am thankful to be an American, proud of America itself, and proud to do my best to uphold the foundational American principles, but not proud simply to live where I do.

2018-07-04 22:42:03 UTC

By dividing up American Identity into these subsections

2018-07-04 22:42:32 UTC

Being an American has an identity

2018-07-04 22:42:57 UTC

It's the same thing as "Proud to be black/white/gay/trans/woman/handicapped"

2018-07-04 22:43:07 UTC

Personally I find it weird to be proud of the colour of your skin, or of who you want to fuck. But at the same time, if it's acceptable to be proud of being black, it should be just as acceptable to be proud of being white. If you can be proud of being gay, it should be just as acceptable to be proud of being straight.

2018-07-04 22:43:09 UTC

Except American encompasses values

2018-07-04 22:43:26 UTC

And skin color or sexuality less so

2018-07-04 22:43:35 UTC

It's more divisive

2018-07-04 22:43:53 UTC

I think they're all kind of silly to be proud of. Be proud to be who you are and include those bits of who you are, but being proud of those descriptors makes it seem like you have little of substance to be proud of.

2018-07-04 22:43:59 UTC

You need something

2018-07-04 22:44:06 UTC

Instead, not only can you not be proud of being white, it's not even acceptable to think that it's merely OK to be white.

2018-07-04 22:44:09 UTC

Otherwise you get this cultural marxism shit

2018-07-04 22:44:13 UTC

I'd say you can be proud of the people who put in the work that gave you rights, but not necessarily of the traits themselves

2018-07-04 22:44:29 UTC

Yeah, but people work in abstracts

2018-07-04 22:44:31 UTC

If you don't actively hate being white, you're triggering people.

2018-07-04 22:44:44 UTC

Simply being an American doesn't mean those values are inherent in yourself. Be proud of the values you hold; not the label.

2018-07-04 22:44:46 UTC

I see being proud of your sexuality and race as just not being ashamed but to each there own

2018-07-04 22:45:02 UTC

@Schedrevka That's the point

2018-07-04 22:45:28 UTC

It's kind of like the idea of God

2018-07-04 22:45:44 UTC

It unifies, even if it means different things for individuals

2018-07-04 22:46:05 UTC

I think nationalism to some extent is a good thing. But only when it's centered around what makes your nation great. To simply say 'we're great because we're us' risks losing sight of those values.

2018-07-04 22:46:08 UTC

As long as you have a core set of values that align, you can unify

2018-07-04 22:46:47 UTC

The idea of God: "some thug who will make you suffer for eternity if you don't do what he tells you to, no matter how much it conflicts with your morals." The far left is godly 😉

2018-07-04 22:46:54 UTC

People shape the nation, and in turn the nation shapes people

2018-07-04 22:47:34 UTC

_The idea of God: "some thug who will make you suffer for eternity if you don't do what he tells you to, no matter how much it conflicts with your morals."_ I'm reading that as banter

2018-07-04 22:47:37 UTC

I can agree with that. I just think that the wording used to describe it is very important so that the important nuances don't fall by the wayside

2018-07-04 22:48:54 UTC

I don't want to say I'm proud of something I didn't earn, but I will say I'm honored to have the opportunity to live up to the values that I want to hold.

2018-07-04 22:49:25 UTC

isn't that being proud?

2018-07-04 22:49:30 UTC

Nope

2018-07-04 22:49:51 UTC

Being proud of yourself for having that opportunity?

2018-07-04 22:50:23 UTC

I see it more as an obligation

2018-07-04 22:50:27 UTC

Shit, what is pride then anyway

2018-07-04 22:50:56 UTC

a sense of enjoying your superiority

2018-07-04 22:51:15 UTC

Nothing wrong with that

2018-07-04 22:51:48 UTC

Everyone likes being the top lobster in some aspect

2018-07-04 22:51:50 UTC

well i'm not against pride, i'm a proud person myself 😉 just joined the convo so i'm not sure on the view

2018-07-04 22:52:19 UTC

nuance between being proud to be an American and being honored to be an American

2018-07-04 22:52:31 UTC

a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of one's close associates, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

2018-07-04 22:52:38 UTC

consciousness of one's own dignity.
