In the US, it's more likely a third party usurps one of the two parties as opposed to just joining them, historically.

well, in the Netherlands, theres so many different parties, not a single one can get a true majority,

So they form coalitions to achieve majority
Which means you get a chance to get parties you don't support at all to suddenly still call the shots

Somehow I doubt that the republicans or the democrats are going to be too eager to do away with the systems that give them a political duopoly. But hey it could be way worse, so I'm not about to start a revolution over it

yeah it's in their best interests to ensure there are always more pressing problems and changing the way voting works will always be near the bottom of the to-do list

the whole campaign for not changing the system can be summed up as "The public are too stupid to put their desired parties in number order."
