@Uksio yeah thats a really hard part with singing, a couple tips i could give you would be if you know any scales on ur bass try to sing and follow the notes in teh range you are comfortable with, then try to repeat without the instrument when comfortable. another trick would be when you try to sing high notes try to prepare to sing higher notes than the one you are trying to hit (with or without a reference pitch) and that tends to relax your vocal chords enough to properly hit that note with all of ur power

The logic you are using would be something valid to look at though, but Cortez was saying that people are working 80 hours and cant feed their kids
