the full conclusion merely speaks to plausibility of an explanation for the data

the study is not making claims which is not reasonable from the data and methodology AFAICT
IANAS though - but neither is any of the people who "critiqued" the methodology
it seems also that methodology would be a technical aspect which is something which PlosONE does look at
