@KaiBran - Get this app, it has the test questions in both a learning setting so you read all of them and then quiz mode where 35 are randomly selected. Keep quizing until you pass it repeatedly.

This is a good resource for where to start as well.

@EDDSkitz - Moto has the KVL 3000/4000/5000 to load keys with. You can buy a used 3000 on eBay for a few hundred dollars and make all the keys you want......and other manufacturers use the KVL to make keys for their radios, too.

Yeah, the ability to make your own keys on the fly has value all to itself.

This is my truck portable

Assembled in the US using US and Japan Radio Company parts.

JRC makes a lot of comms part for many companies.

@[CA] SoyBoi - as with anything gear related, two is one one is none. Plus, having the ability to share comms in the field with extra radios is a good idea.

Because then you know they are set up to work in unison.

@EDDSkitz - working within the P25 industry affords me luxuries I am lucky to have without the expense.

@EDDSkitz - which you can do using a KVL and a P25C capable radio, Moto or otherwise. Just make sure that encryption is enabled on the radio.

@GRANITE - A horse is just dog food held together by glue.

@baconreclaimer - I was thinking Tavor as well.

@redbeard - is that proprietary for Moto radios or applicable to other brands like the KVL?

> I looked them up after he posted earlier.... made me feel poor
@EDDSkitz - I'm just as poor then, because I could never justify spending the amount of money it would take to get even one XL200P. I'm very fortunate that my profession gives me toys, as any specialized position in any given industry does........and if it is any consolation I own a Baofeng and two pairs of FRS/GMRS radios, too.

@redbeard - Harris' RPM and RPM2 programming software are worlds apart from each other. Luckily the XL family can only be programmed with #2, which makes programming a radio a breeze compared to life under the original RPM. I have to stay current in RPM, though, because of legacy radios I come across from time to time.

This is something I can speak to specifically with some knowledge and background.

@EDDSkitz - Nice! A coworker of mine adapted the Bose Vic 3 CVC to work with the legacy radios we have. If time ever permits he and I want to make the adapter to use the Bose with the XL, too.

I have a couple of Kenwood radios someone threw out at work last year, still in the box. They're UHF portables.....I just haven't taken the time to learn anything about them.

I kinda figured. Since I have a MA/COM, Tyco, Ericsson, Harris collection of radios I am pretty covered in the following band splits: 136-174MHz, 335-380MHz, 378-470MHz, 440-512MHz, 450-522MHz, 764-870MHz, and 896-941MHz. I can do analog and P25Conventional and encrypt everything, too. I should spend time with the other brand radios I've collected over the years but the time........

I'm a P25 Technician, been in the industry since 2012 and I am still learning stuff. I am a rock star with the terminals, becoming savvy with sites so I can get into the software side of them without breaking them, but I am still dangerous to the IP network side because I don't know what to touch/not touch without bringing the whole empire down......oops, wrong block, sorry! So I stay away from the Core........

I have a BA in Psych......

I started as a software tester and through internal training grew into my current career track.

Engineers seek me out for my hands on knowledge.

Making yourself a valued resource is good for the resume.

I hate electrical because of the bite but I dive in when I have to fix something. Google and YouTube are my friends. I'm pretty good mechanically, I do a lot of my vehicle maintenance. I've split the case on a motorcycle engine and do all the maintenance on my fleet of bikes, did more than one engine swap on cars, have Frankenstein'd things to work from various parts......being self reliant saves money.

Aside from the commonly asked questions about getting started with comms and what radios should one get, I think this group chat should really be focused on developing a frequency plan and share scanning updates on local and state wide transmissions of importance.

Wasn't the Talon a descendant from the Conquest/Starion?

My folks had a neighbor who had either a Conquest or Starion, I don't quite recall which of the two as this was back in the late 80s and I was drooling over motorcycles and Muscle Cars.

The lines were cool to that body style but give me a V8 any day, especially a Wedge.

Region Chats are a great idea but here is an enhancement suggestion. Define which states are in which region because some states can get cross categorized being on the edge of two regions. Virginia is southeast, BTW.......

They can scan the airwaves to find Tx anyways, that is where encryption comes in if people have the means.

Pertinent details can be ironed out per op in person but general discussions can still be held in the open. I just want to see this chat get more technical than the two most commonly asked questions in the other Comms group on any platform.

@Mando - http://www.miklor.com will show you a slew of radios to choose from. They do lots of reviews and provide tutorials and guides on both hardware and software.

@[CA] SoyBoi - It is not illegal (with the FCC) to have Public Safety frequencies programmed into a radio. The illegal action is actually transmitting on those frequencies but receiving them is legal. The FCC has specific rules for transmission/transmitters and doesn't regulate reception/receivers. So to avoid Txing either leave that frequency field blank (if possible) or use a different, not in use frequency (if you have to enter something because the field can't be blank). Additionally, some programmable radios have the option to uncheck a radio's ability to Tx on a particular frequency. If that is the case you are specifically telling the radio that on a particular frequency the radio is Rx only, no Tx.

@[CA] SoyBoi - If you are ordering a BF radio/programming cable and plan to use Chirp, your first exercise should be to programming the NOAA Wx frequencies into the radio. These are Rx only frequencies that allow you to listen to a continuous, looped weather report. When you get your radio to Rx the weather you will have begun to understand how to program and grow from there. There are nine NOAA frequencies total, but the first seven are most commonly used across the US and Canada. The other two are specific to coastal/maritime use in some Canadian areas.

Micah Johnson believed he had a legitimate beef with DPD because of the rhetoric from the militant BLM movement........ touchy subject or not Micah proved yet again how much one man with a rifle can do against a superior force.

> I have a slightly better than stock 351 Iโ€™m putting together to drop into it for a rebuild
@baconreclaimer Cleveland or Windsor?

My 16yo just sent me this photo, says he is okay.....on my way to the scene now. Fuck.

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/704577856914849802/707702593547403435/Resized_20200506_165917.jpeg

@baconreclaimer - 351W motors aren't all that common, that will be an interesting build.

I have seen more 260/289/302s and Clevelands than I can count but only a couple 351Ws. I first wrenched on a 302 back in the mid-80s. Then I got smart and went Mopar and never went back.

However, I would kill for a CobraJet powered '72 Gran Torino Sport.

My asshole father owned a '73 Mustang Coupe with a 302v2. I learned my Ford from him, and then Mopar when I upgraded.

The problem with Ford was the restrictive heads. They choked their motors.

I learned to drive in a '68 Plymouth Sport Fury III wagon with a 318.

I've only ever owned gas motors.

I've a '14 Ram right now with a 345cid Hemi. I love my truck.

We got our son a '14 Jeep Cherokee in February and today he paid it off by totaling it.

He dozed off and hit a guard rail at 60mph. They brought part of the guard rail to the tow yard.

I've never seen so many airbags.....it is like there were airbags inside of airbags. He walked away without a scratch/cut/mark save for a small airbag burn to his left forearm.

> I won't cross water. I will walk a mile around to avoid water crossings
@Catman Sorry guys, I can't Booger tonight, there's water.....

@KGBSeeSpots687 - If you don't know about setting up a radio for use, a Baofeng is as good a place to start as any. Did you order the programming cable as well?

If you got a bundle, cool, otherwise they usually don't ship with one.....unless things changed in the last few years. Either way, just confirm so you can begin using Chirp when it arrives.

If we take Venezuela, there will be no speed limits......anywhere.

This arrived today, yeah buddy! Gonna mount it on a Nerf N-Strike Vulcan EBF-25 Dart Blasterย .

> Oh nice. I lke Vortex
@Sparrow It is my second optic from them, the first being a red dot.

> @[VA] JediComms My favorite from vortex is easily the spitfire 3x prism. Clean, reliable, accurate, and easy to zero.
@Soulraiser I've been running a StrikeFire II on my 556 for a few years and haven't regretted that purchase.

@Bigcooler - Where are you? What frequencies are you trying to listen to?

Here are some of my radios. Aside from the Baofeng UV-82HP, the rest can do analog, P25Conventional, and P25Trunked. Three of the portables and the mobile base station they are sitting on can do multi-band (136MHz through 861/870MHz). The portable off to the right is a single band, UHF-High only. AES and DES encryption is also possible with all except the Baofeng.

I want a Boerboel but I've got to get some accommodating acreage for one first.

> Whoa boerboels are huge
@Reno - Thus the acreage requirement.......and lions for it to hunt.

Boerboels were purpose breed by the Boers to protect livestock from lions in South Africa.

There is an urban legend that animal control in South Africa would feed the stray dog population to zoo lions after hours. One day they caught a Boerboel......and the following morning discovered they needed a new lion.

My first 1100, bought back in '91. Still have it, but currently stripped done to the frame for a resto-mods.

@Anonymoose - get the toys before the woman. I had three bikes and one Muscle Car when I met her. Two kids and 22 years later I now have seven bikes and the two cars pictured. Next will be a workshop to take the cars down to the unibody and resto-mods them as well. Bikes require less space and cash so they get attention right now.

@Yeetasaurus Rex - Nothing wrong with starting with basic.

@LoudPills - http://www.miklor.com has a crapton of cheaper radios reviewed on his site. This is a great resource for insight and tutorials on basically anything cheap radio.

@Jon - You're passing on trim to BS in here........?

But does she have big 'ol udders?

Stable is boring....they make you marry, have kids, let you have a garage full of motorcycles, and encourage you to be who you are.

@John Public - I had three when I met her. I have seven now and plans for at least five more.

@redbeard - Yes, it is an XG100M Unity. Great radio.

@redbeard - You mean the touch screen like mine here?

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/704437945817497661/708500478849187840/20200407_193618.jpg

@redbeard - There are two control heads - CH721, which is a "dumb" CH and limits the MRU to hold one personality. The touch screen, CH100, is a "smart" CH and allows the MRU to hold 10 personalities. The CH100 is pretty cool but It can be fickle. I had one on the base station but it wouldn't play nicely so I finally swapped it for a 721.

@redbeard - It isn't the radio, it is the radio programming software that makes it "impossible". Without system admin permission for the particular trunked system, you won't get a pass.

@Catman - Here are some puppies I saw this evening.

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/704564549482840074/708512608684343356/20200508_183825.jpg

@Catman - Are you feeling cabin fever?

@Bogs_Bunny - The FCC has regulations about transmissions/transmitters, not reception/receivers. Any radio can receive anything it can tune in and hear.....but if that radio is not type certified to transmit on a particular frequency and you do, then your action can be considered illegal.

@Anonymoose - We are extreme by the very fact that we have opposing views. That is the only requirement for extremism, speak opposite of the projected narrative.

@Anonymoose - Freedom and Liberty are not extreme views but you can't tell Vice that.

We can't fix stupid, and they've had the same problem - LobotomyGafford and the softball hating shooter are just two examples.

All I am saying is stay consistent and disavow the whackos.....there are others amongst us, and them.

@Acadian Adventurer - On Wyoming exists alright......I had to drive this overstuffed Uhaul towing a car trailer with a stuffed to the gills minivan onboard from Commiefornia to Varghinia back in 2010. Damn near an entire day to climb up and down Wyoming to reach Nebraska.
