I think the whole mass popularity of Call of Duty comes from situations where young people are somewhat subjugated by overly Christian parents who oddly won't permit any action games beyond the scope of Cod. It's not a definite, but a very likely scenario.

I think Cod is a good game too, just only played one of the old ones from PS2 and not the modern Quake/Unreal-esque ones.
