one hypothesis i have came to mind to that mysterious asteroid
what if it was hollowed out and converted into some form of space station?
for long term generational space travel, such a task would be ideal, because you could in theory build more underground annexes as the population gets larger on such a journey. you would also be able to extract resources from the asteroid as you built more installations, slowly but surely converting it into one large spaceship.
such a trip could take decades or centuries for a group of travelers without ftl propulsion.
since we have not detected any form of ftl disturbances around the asteroid, if it is an interstellar spaceship of sorts it most likely is a primitive one.
also such ships may have stasis chambers
meaning even if we tried to send a signal to the object we are not guaranteed a response at all. that is if it is a primitive starship
it may happen to us one day, where we send primitive space arcs out into the vastness of space and settle some far off planet and by the time we do the guys back home would have already colonized most of local interstellar space using ftl technology or we might drive ourselves to extinction due to war. Whichever comes first, at least the human race would continue in some form or another.

also hollowing out an asteroid eliminates the problem of trying to build a large ship in orbit and shipping all the resources and supplies needed. an asteroid can contain metals for building material, organic molecules for soil production to grow food, water in the form of ice that can be extracted and stored on board and etc.

oxygen can be extracted from the asteroid for air to breathe as well
asteroids also contain alot of nickel, nickel 63 can be used in radioisotope generators to run essential systems long term without intervention by workers
nickel 63 atomic batteries can run for 100 years unattended before needing to be replaced
coupling that with plutonium or uranium generators could be enough to power a sublight spaceship during long term stasis hibernation
most space probes use plutonium batteries to operate their systems

There's no such thing as fossil fuels. Oil, coal, and all of that shit is produced naturally by the earth. The millions of tons of fuel we use everyday would have used up all the billions of "dinosaurs" by now. The fossil fuel term is to make you believe it's scarce and irreplaceable when it's more abundant than most commodities like diamonds. It's a renewable resource.
