Also making it easier to kill is the whole point of guns. I thought they ban guns that makes it easier to kill a large number of people at once. (So stuff like machineguns or heavier weapons make sense since they don't really offer much help in self defens, but would come in handy in a mass shooting)

It's small enough to carry a decent amount in and outside magazines without being a serious burden, while being reasonably lethal. There's better rounds, sure, but 9mm is omnipresent and functional.
