what pun?

2018-02-07 15:37:59 UTC

oh

2018-02-07 15:38:08 UTC

not intentional, actually

2018-02-07 15:38:31 UTC

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/248100475054850050/410821641288024064/Screen_Shot_2018-02-07_at_16.38.15.png

2018-02-07 15:38:53 UTC

why are Taiwanese people so depressive?

2018-02-07 15:39:05 UTC

not depressive, just too laid back

2018-02-07 15:39:11 UTC

"this is good enough"

2018-02-07 15:39:14 UTC

etc.

2018-02-07 15:39:24 UTC

i am too but i mean, that's just how it is

If you're in a building that will collapse, then youre fucked already

2018-02-07 15:40:22 UTC

depends on the strength of the earthquake, the building and your luck

2018-02-07 15:40:33 UTC

you might just be trapped for a few days

you have like, 5 seconds to get out if the quake is large enough to seriously damage your building

2018-02-07 15:41:02 UTC

Assuming you fall with the building and the building is not a 10+ story building or something like that

2018-02-07 15:41:09 UTC

You might be trapped in the crashed building

2018-02-07 15:41:16 UTC

a few bottles of water and a radio might save your life

2018-02-07 15:41:29 UTC

are there anti earthquake building standards in taiwan?

2018-02-07 15:41:41 UTC

yes, putting empty barrels of oil into the walls

2018-02-07 15:41:44 UTC

hah

2018-02-07 15:41:49 UTC

some of the best in the world if what i've been told is correct

2018-02-07 15:41:51 UTC

but yeah, that too

@porco true, I have my abandoned building exploration bag ready for emergnecies

2018-02-07 15:42:15 UTC

have you ever seen the Taipei 101s earthquake "defense" system?

2018-02-07 15:42:25 UTC

you can take the lift up and see that huge ball

2018-02-07 15:42:32 UTC

I went there once, was impressive

lmao giant red ball in the middle of the buiulding . sounds funny at first, but its an engineering masterpeice

2018-02-07 15:42:42 UTC

lol

2018-02-07 15:42:55 UTC

it actually is

2018-02-07 15:43:03 UTC

I just wonder how much the suspensions actually help

2018-02-07 15:43:11 UTC

I mean if the building starts moving

I was up at the observation deck during an earthquake once

2018-02-07 15:43:26 UTC

that must have been super exciting

2018-02-07 15:43:29 UTC

did the ball move?

2018-02-07 15:43:37 UTC

i just wonder if you even felt anything

no i couldn't see any apparent moving

that one we could see is a model on display actually

2018-02-07 15:44:33 UTC

yes the 101 is impressive

I just looked it up, the ball is the real ball. not a model on display.

but the bottom is supported by hydraulic stuff so it doesn't look like its moving

2018-02-07 15:46:20 UTC

yes the hydraulic suspensions

2018-02-07 15:46:30 UTC

I am just questioning their size compared to the size of the ball

its protection seems somewhat limited though

the hydraulic suspensions seem to be there to limit the movement of the ball so that it doesn't swing out of control

The ball may provide ample suspension from horizontal quakes but the same can't be said for quakes with a lot of vertical movement

2018-02-07 15:55:49 UTC

if theres vertical movement shits fucked no matter what you do, thankfully thata pretty rare

another small quake right now.

2018-02-07 16:03:00 UTC

poor Hualien tbh

2018-02-07 16:03:20 UTC

Also Taiwan looks like a sweet potato

2018-02-07 16:03:26 UTC

๐Ÿค”

a sweet potato can look like anything

2018-02-07 16:06:53 UTC

yes but the typical sweet potato is longish and slightly curved like that

2018-02-07 16:28:28 UTC

Is that your home?

2018-02-07 16:28:59 UTC

Do you live in a tall building?

somewhat. but this is pretty common

the cracks keep forming between plaster wall dividers

if it were concrete walls i'd be in trouble

2018-02-07 16:31:16 UTC

Sure, doesn't look cool anyway

i have bad feeling another large earthquake soon.

this is how people here feel 24/7

2018-02-07 17:32:39 UTC

stay safe fella

2018-02-07 18:09:04 UTC

get it inspected. It could be something simple like external damage on the plaster layer (assuming reinforced concrete structure with masonry walls)

2018-02-07 18:09:16 UTC

if you're renting, move out ASAP

2018-02-07 18:11:01 UTC

christ

2018-02-07 18:54:29 UTC

@ferongr you've clearly never been to Taiwan

2018-02-07 18:55:00 UTC

When I met my gf in Taiwan the first time, her student dorm had 2-3cm cracks and you could see the bricks

2018-02-07 18:57:55 UTC

its a hipstery design element at that point

2018-02-07 18:57:57 UTC

<:tipsfedora:383326576609329162>

2018-02-07 19:08:22 UTC

The first time I met the boyfriend of my wife, it put some cracks in my self-esteem

2018-02-07 19:08:39 UTC

@Alfadir <:pepestressed:327933525124841482>

yep cracks are everywhere lol

but its fine as long as the key foundation parts of the building are strong

2018-02-07 20:26:31 UTC

@transience you'll find that the network hardware wasn't at fault there

2018-02-07 20:26:43 UTC

something further upstream went shitty

2018-02-07 20:27:08 UTC

probably all 3 providers rely on the same fibre backhaul and some retard fucked shit up back there

2018-02-07 20:28:27 UTC

that's the point I was making

2018-02-07 20:28:44 UTC

if an earthquake nukes BT, GSM is no good for me

2018-02-07 20:28:52 UTC

now on the topic of redundancy

2018-02-07 20:29:06 UTC

usually you'd get handed over to another node in case of failure

2018-02-07 20:29:28 UTC

But if all nodes go down as a result of the same error you're in deep shit

2018-02-07 20:30:11 UTC

take nobody's infrastructure for granted in an autistic diaster scenario

2018-02-07 20:30:20 UTC

Fair point

2018-02-07 20:30:57 UTC

Here in Aust the ACMA make it a fucking law to have some sort of backup line for cell towers in case of emergencies

2018-02-07 20:31:33 UTC

2018-02-08 04:41:16 UTC

do you think chinks are secretly fracking everywhere for oil

2018-02-08 04:59:03 UTC

If they were fracking enough to cause this level of instabilty then their strategic oil reserves would be full, they wouldnt be buying coal and the market would be like 10 bucks a barrel

2018-02-08 06:28:47 UTC

Well maybe if we encourage them to frack more they finally kill themselves off completly

2018-02-08 06:32:25 UTC

Don't make the copypaste guy's mistake and learn traditional chinese at least

2018-02-08 10:35:07 UTC

wut?

2018-02-08 10:35:26 UTC

most of my knowledge is simplified but I'm trying to learn traditional because I am mostly interested in Taiwan

2018-02-08 10:35:42 UTC

but it's difficult to find proper resources on learning traditional Chinese. The resources on simplified Chinese are more accessible

2018-02-08 10:40:52 UTC

@Sdeck37 traditional chinese isn't a language

2018-02-08 10:40:57 UTC

it's the writing system

2018-02-08 10:41:29 UTC

I think he was saying it because I wrote the dishes in traditional Characters

2018-02-08 10:41:39 UTC

2018-02-08 10:41:55 UTC

@Sdeck37 the copypasta guy learned mandarin

2018-02-08 10:42:02 UTC

you can use either simp/trad for that

2018-02-08 10:42:11 UTC

who's the copypasta guy?

2018-02-08 10:42:29 UTC

2018-02-08 10:42:44 UTC

2018-02-08 10:42:53 UTC

@transience Mandarin is also lingua franca in itself in taiwan
You knew what i meant

2018-02-08 10:43:02 UTC

no i didnt

2018-02-08 10:43:02 UTC

it depends where

2018-02-08 10:43:14 UTC

my girlfriend's father can't speak Mandarin at all

2018-02-08 10:43:15 UTC

They won't send you to mainland if you don't know how to read there

2018-02-08 10:43:17 UTC

traditional exclusively refers to the characters

2018-02-08 10:43:36 UTC

it's got nothing to do with the spoken language

2018-02-08 10:44:11 UTC

he only speaks Min Nan

2018-02-08 10:44:43 UTC

and he is disappointed that I'm investing so many resources in learning Mandarin instead of Min Nan

2018-02-08 11:29:29 UTC

@transience no offense

2018-02-08 11:41:24 UTC

I'm not offended at all tbh

2018-02-08 11:41:39 UTC

I just pretend women don't exist

https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/248100475054850050/411124417486258176/autistic.png

2018-02-08 11:43:27 UTC

I prefer to focus on myself for now and sort that out later

2018-02-08 12:06:26 UTC

Problem: chink is unhappy that she can't visit her family for CNY because she has exams. Should I:

a) surprise her with taking her to a Chinese social event nearby that has some weird concerts on CNY night, one of the singer is even Taiwanese

b) invite some of her chink friends who can't go back either, to our home, cook altogether and have a CNY stlye dinner here

2018-02-08 12:06:34 UTC

or another suggestion?

2018-02-08 12:07:00 UTC

give her a red packet

2018-02-08 12:07:09 UTC

yes that, too

2018-02-08 12:07:10 UTC

chink should be happy with money

2018-02-08 12:07:15 UTC

that's all you need

2018-02-08 12:07:27 UTC

I have a few Taiwan dollar left from last holiday and I will give it to her with some of those weird envelopes from the China shop

2018-02-08 12:10:52 UTC

b + red packet

2018-02-08 12:15:12 UTC

do taiwan celebrate chinese new year?

2018-02-08 12:15:29 UTC

who else celebrate chinese new year except chinks

2018-02-08 12:15:50 UTC

Korea

2018-02-08 12:16:59 UTC

if you mean the lunar new year, then I think viets celebrate it too

2018-02-08 12:21:22 UTC

thank you for the input

2018-02-08 12:21:28 UTC

I will invite her friends + red packet

2018-02-08 12:57:45 UTC

So for mainland Chinese New year traditions there aren't many. Pop fireworks, eat a lot of food, give money to kids in red envelopes

2018-02-08 12:58:16 UTC

Invite people over to eat. Watch the new years gala on Chinese tv (there are online live streams)

2018-02-08 12:58:37 UTC

You pretty much spend a whole week never leaving home. Stock up on food before hand

2018-02-08 12:58:55 UTC

Put up a bunch of red shit outside your front door

2018-02-08 12:59:04 UTC

Stuff that says lucky and money etc.

2018-02-08 12:59:26 UTC

Hang some Chinese characters upside down on the walls

2018-02-08 12:59:32 UTC

Boom chinese new year

2018-02-08 13:11:32 UTC

ye but if you put it like that, that's every holiday

2018-02-08 13:12:05 UTC

>christmas: pop fireworks, eat a lot of food, give money to kids

2018-02-08 13:33:55 UTC

@kaetaa you can replace Chinese New Year with Christmas and fine-tune it a little bit and it would work, too

2018-02-08 13:47:13 UTC

Itโ€™s pretty funny actually

2018-02-08 13:48:00 UTC

See Christmas is basically a party because it might be the last time you see parents/grandparents before the real cold sets in

2018-02-08 13:48:12 UTC

And it was a historic time for them to die

2018-02-08 13:48:53 UTC

China does it later in the year because they wouldnโ€™t have to feed those people in a feast

2018-02-08 13:52:47 UTC

That got grim pretty fast

2018-02-08 13:55:50 UTC

they rather celebrate that the old people are halfway through the critical time

2018-02-08 14:05:20 UTC

Yeah there's not much cultural stuff with Chinese New year, it's just a standard holiday to see family.

2018-02-08 14:05:39 UTC

But they go all out

2018-02-08 14:05:47 UTC

It's the time of year to impress your family

2018-02-08 14:05:52 UTC

To show how much money you made

2018-02-08 14:06:07 UTC

So buy the extra fancy food not because it tastes good but because it's expensive

2018-02-08 14:06:59 UTC

So ironically I had some of the worse food ever during CNY last year because people will buy the most expensive stuff, so the people selling really cheap shit will put it in a nice box and sell it for loads

2018-02-08 14:07:23 UTC

Again, I understand I'm explaining most products, but it's especially bad during CNY

2018-02-08 14:08:36 UTC

Why are Chinese girls so good @porco

2018-02-08 14:08:49 UTC

theyre not really lol

2018-02-08 14:08:54 UTC

not most of them, at least

2018-02-08 14:13:37 UTC

@Deleted User I don't know, I actually never had one. Just a Taiwanese and she's the best I've ever had

2018-02-08 14:14:19 UTC

In terms of gf quality for me it was
Taiwan #1
Germany #2
Belarus #3
And Korea #4

2018-02-08 14:14:35 UTC

But Korea and Belarus are almost same trash quality

2018-02-08 14:14:51 UTC

Germany was fine but she had weird fetishes

2018-02-08 14:17:44 UTC

Please do explain in further detail

2018-02-08 14:18:46 UTC

The Korean one was working in Germany for a limited amount of time. Her hidden scope was to fuck as many white guys as possible because no one knew her here anyway and she wanted to have that experience

Like movies and TV shows based on the war with Japan, but if you look at the numbers, Japan completely obliterated China during the war, despite having 30% of Chinas troops. But in these shows, China always has super smart and super tactical military men and it shows the Japanese as barbaric monsters who just want to kill for fun. They also show Chinese destroying millions of Japanese in really horrific death scenes.

2018-02-08 16:15:42 UTC

30% of the shows on Chinese television are Chinese vs Japanese war time stuff

2018-02-08 16:16:25 UTC

These shows are all very popular. Chinks love watching their smart country men destroying hordes of dumb Japanese soldiers

2018-02-08 16:17:30 UTC

Chinese believe they won the war (which technically, they did, because US forced Japan to surrender) but Chinese people honestly believe they were the ones responsible for driving Japanese out

2018-02-08 16:18:16 UTC

I asked a few former co-workers and they all had similar stories of secret society Chinese communists (before it was established) who basically won the war for China

2018-02-08 16:18:33 UTC

And how they were super smart and infiltrated the Japs and Japan is small

2018-02-08 16:18:35 UTC

Etc etc.

2018-02-08 16:19:05 UTC

Also saying "small Japan" is an insult in China to Japan. They think because the physical land mass of Japan is small , China is better

2018-02-08 16:19:31 UTC

Which explains why China gets so butthurt if you ever say something isn't China (Taiwan etc) because their pride is with how big their country is

2018-02-08 16:22:06 UTC

Ever heard of the flying tigers ? They basically won the air war and slowed the Japanese down in China

There was a period of time in Chinese history where a group of highly trained atheletes tried to fight colonization via martial arts

2018-02-08 16:29:00 UTC

There was also a period where a lot of Europeans shot them all down and didn't even care about it..

2018-02-08 16:32:04 UTC

Yes all of history people have shit all over chinese

2018-02-08 16:32:15 UTC

And that is part of where their insecuirty comes from

2018-02-08 16:32:27 UTC

It's a culmination of events and beliefs

2018-02-08 16:58:10 UTC

The Maoist period is also great

2018-02-08 17:00:34 UTC

Campaigns such as the pest control one are just so incredibly sad. They are not even rooted in opportunism, just in plain ignorance on a massive scale

Japan would have annexed the entirety of China had it not been for America <:chink:323022148870602752>

They were steamrolling everything with no real signs of stoppage coming any time soon

2018-02-08 18:09:37 UTC

Nah, russia would have stopped them and the invasion of Manchuria severely out streched them

2018-02-08 18:24:14 UTC

>Implying Russia cared about the chinks

2018-02-08 18:25:10 UTC

They cared about japanese encroaching in thier eastern territories

2018-02-08 18:31:22 UTC

You forget that a lot of that region was less Russia than no man's land after the Japan Russia war.
They didn't had to defend, they'd had to expand to fight Japanese troops..

Around that time, Germany had started messing with Russia as well. Splitting their forces like that would not have done them a whole lot of good.

@johnfrum Russians would have had to use more divisions to defend a larger stretch of land + at the beginning the Manchurian army was still a formidable force

2018-02-08 19:08:24 UTC

On the topic of Chinese military. Where do Chinese soldiers predominantly come from ? City or countryside?

I tried it yesterday

2018-02-08 19:18:05 UTC

The idea is super fun

2018-02-08 19:18:31 UTC

But it needs to be polished up quite a bit

2018-02-08 19:19:01 UTC

The movement is sluggish to me and I don't know how shooting works

2018-02-08 19:19:09 UTC

And melee doesn't work at all

2018-02-08 21:19:30 UTC

i like it. has a lot of points where you just sit and contemplate about ur next moves, i havnt found a game where ur forced into that or die

2018-02-08 21:20:20 UTC

2018-02-08 21:20:49 UTC

2018-02-08 21:58:21 UTC

2018-02-08 22:04:17 UTC

tier-88 means shitty inland city

2018-02-08 22:04:33 UTC

tier-1 cities are cities like Shenzen etc

2018-02-08 22:05:08 UTC

nongmin = "country bumpkin", basically people from the inland low tier cities

2018-02-08 22:05:43 UTC

2018-02-08 22:34:50 UTC
