A Troublesome Inheritance by Nicholas Wade

2018-01-18 20:06:00 UTC

This article is eleven years old, but it is too good not to share. The authors reevaluate Lewontinโ€™s claim that individuals between populations (i.e, โ€œracesโ€) are more similar than within them. They find that is only true for 20 percent of a population measuring genetic distance by loci and distribution of traits themselves overlap even less. These are in other words genetic outliers. They conclude that Lewontin was wrong and that individuals within a population can be shown to be distinct from out-group populations given enough genetic material.

SNPs might be a better measure of diversity between human populations because they are attached to genes, so they can represent genetic expression more acutely. Looking at SNPs, almost all human populations genetically cluster into one of five racial groups (European, African, Amerindian, East Asian, or South Asian). One of the authors gave a presentation that touched on this. Hereโ€™s his graphic.

Thank you for sharing this!!!

If you'd like to learn more about SNPs check out SNPedia. There is a wealth of information, including mutations associated with most putative SNPs and related information on prevalence of these DNA variations in different populations as well as biological mechanisms and effects

@JC17-OR This is fantastic! Thanks for sharing.

@everyone @SamanthaM I've made an archive of sorts for HBD, and JQ literature. Feel free to ask for mostly anything and I'll get it for you.

@JC17-OR Thank you! That's awesome!

@JC17-OR I've actually been thinking about doing something along those lines, setting it up on my "https://a.goyish.site" but only have a few things...if you want a place to host/mirror it...

2018-02-07 03:03:52 UTC

Thanks brother, I'll move over when I get a chance.

2018-02-07 03:04:06 UTC

Maybe a pastebin?

So where is this JQ and HDB compilation? @JC17-OR

2019-02-13 17:51:54 UTC

Can I check it out?
