i havent asked but are you planning on adding the olifant MBT ?
well the mk1 and 2
Yep Olifant will be modeled at some point both the Mk I and Mk II
Ratels will also have their respective Mk's right now I'm modeling the Mk I
ahh i cant wait
So I'll be able to add the MK I to the earlier operations while the Mk II to later operations
Same with the Casspir.
yup
I'm looking forward to the ZT3 that'll be fun!
the ingwe missile ?
Yep
Will be the scariest thing on the battlefield as it cut through T-55's like nothing
Of course they'll only be on a few maps set in 1988
But the SANDF will have them on all maps
i wonder if the eland will be accurate on the battlefield seeing that they knocked out more powerfull t55s
Well I'll make sure they'll be able to take them out at close range from the rear and sides
Though one shot from a T-55 and you're cooking...
yup
luckily the eland is fast and can manouvre quickly after firing
Yup but I have a feeling players are going to feel very vulnerable in them considering it can only stop up to 7.62x51 rounds anything above that goes through.
i believ the turret could stop a bit more
since the eland was our modification of the panhard EML
The mediocre performance of improvised tank destroyers at Cuvelai convinced Ep van Lill, commander of 61 Mechanised, that his men could no longer be asked to fight tanks with armoured cars. Van Lill informed General Viljoen that the Eland-90 simply could not stand up to the heavier protection and armament of T-54/55s. "Tank busting" expended too much 90mm ammunition and fatigued recoil systems. As demonstrated during Askari, crew morale was also affected when ordered to take on T-55s in their vulnerable vehicles. This contradicted South African Armoured Corps (SAAC) doctrine, which was to fight tanks with tanks.
A few weeks later, van Lill was vindicated when a squadron of British Centurions - modified in South Africa as the "Olifant Mk1" - were delivered to the 61 Mechanised base in Omuthiya. As Angola was not seen as a conventional threat to South West Africa itself, the retention of tanks in that territory was not regarded as cost-effective and Olifant crews frequently rotated out. During Operations Moduler, Hooper, and Packer, Ratel-90s were again used in the role of tank destroyers.
Task Force Victor's performance during Askari left much to be desired. At SADF review meetings, the reservists involved were bluntly criticised as "the worst battle group in 82 Mechanised Brigade". More attention was devoted to improving reservist leadership and morale. Also noted was the antiquity of the Eland, which was beginning to hinder operations. It was not deployed in Angola by the SADF again.
that i can believe
the eland was never meant to be a tank destroyer
After Op Askari there were no more Elands. So I'll have to make sure I don't put any in on the maps that take place after said operation
yup
it wouldve been cool if it was possible to lock a scouting ability to a certain vehicle like the eland
Though SWATF continued to use them til the end of the war IIRC.
and then in later ops it could go to the ratel
How would a scouting ability work?
Lets move the discussion to general chat
10-4
Learned how to render out models with the matcap materials applied.
Would this pass as a boabab
uhh yes and no
trunk is fine
but branches are a bit weird
Where'd you find that? Or did you make it yourself?
Made it, but will have to start from scratch... LOST IT!! lol
Damn
Made in speedtree?
That costs money ๐ฌ... No. I am a cheap skate when it comes to things like that ๐
Tree it
I have thousands of boababs around me, I think I should get some photos before I try this again
Was gonna do a 3d scan, but I don't think it would work
OK so I do still have some pics... I was way off
That's far cry 2's baobab
God I loved Far Cry 2

Ja FC2 was lekker though the constant respawning enemies was a bit much! But I loved the setting. FC series really should revisit it...
Nope, they'd get too much flak because it's not white people or random arabs being killed, and that's racist in the media's eyes.
Eh maybe or they just don't feel like returning to that setting yet.
Probably, but after the media got on them for not saying 'white man bad' in Far Cry 5 I can tell you there's no way they'd risk the media crucifying them on a return to Africa.
Screw the media. They can flap their lips all day but the next day they'll always be talking about something else and completely forget yesterday.
It's all about clicks.
We can all think that but no corporation would risk losing even a dollar over it.
I seriously doubt they would lose a lot of sales. Maybe from a few soccer moms buying their sweet little johnny his birthday present but as for the average gamer that purchases their own games they won't give a damn.
Anyway best to move this chat to off-topic
Nvm saw it TreeIT
I'll dl it too and see if I can create some acacias
Needs more branches
Looks nice
First map I'm going to reuse one of the afghan maps. Delete all the afghan buildings and out of place foliage. Add baobabs and acacias and african huts and buildings
Yip, had a lot of branches, but took them out, looked to cluttered (don't know how to much detail will affect fps) but ja A.D.D is getting the better of me
Another though I had was that it would be a better way to add leaves, to hide the lack of branches. But it doesn't work like that, need more branches for all those leaves ;/
@66Lost99 It depends on how many polygons the tree has. You can have a lot of branches provided they're low res.
If you look at some of the trees in squad the smaller branches are 2d
LODs are also a factor. The further away the tree the less branches and detail needed
Cool, add branches back in, and yes it looks better already ;) still having a problem with the leaves, but will see
I see there is mapscape as well
I wonder if I can export height maps from it to the SDK
I think I did download it to my pc, but never opened it.
Lol, I think my tree is ready for the troopers mod
Have you imported it into the SDK?
Interesting when I tried to run the exe
it said windows protected your pc
dafuq...
Who needs protection... Switch it all off (jokes) my sdk is out of date and data is a bitch in moz. I can send it to you somehow?
I downloaded the zip version instead
no need to install that one
Depends how big the file is
if its over 8mb then it won't go through discord
Aha that's what I did
watching this tut for now
Paste it into trees folder, think it will work
It's got to be scaled to the right size
I'm watching that tutorial. A few things have to be tweaked in blender for it to work right in UE4
Slowly but surely getting used to the new blender. Just taking some time for my brain to remap the shortcuts. I keep stuffing up here and there trying to use old shortcuts that do something either completely different or nothing at all ๐ฑ
I do miss the ctrl + alt + shift + c shortcut to set origin/cursor as I used it a lot. Now it's shift + s then comes up with a radial menu blablablabla I'll get used to it. ๐
Anyway While looking through my reference images I noticed the police version of the Casspir has speakers on them. I thought I'd model them in as an option. Might not make it into the final model though.
But hell would it be funny if you could play any music of your choice over those speakers while driving over the enemy players. The song that came to my head upon imagining that moment was Ride of the Valkyries.
I also spent some time renaming parts as I had a shit ton of parts named cube, torus, cylinder and so on. Difficult to know what is what without names.
Interesting trivia about the Casspir
Casspir Mk II parts added.
Changed the rear wheels as per reference
Will do some more modeling after dinner. And try to get the Discord streaming to work properly so you all can watch.
@everyone I'm live
Can watch the stream but only up to 10 people I believe.
on
Mk I Casspir
Mk II Casspir
Looking real good
Just going to do one last thing and replace the tires of the Ratel and Buffel with the Casspir's tires as they all use the same ones
I actually used the Buffel tire models I already made on the Casspir. Just rounded them off as they were a bit "square" before
I drove past a mk2 today
Lucky bugger
Lol but it wasnt layed out like that
Depends on the variant. There are different Mk II's
There isn't much consistency though with Casspirs I noticed.
Well it had a storage container where the spare wheel is and the spare wheel was where it is on the mk1
Yup exactly what I've been seeing in my reference images as well
It was also a bit shorter but it was definitely a casspir
Some have steel storage compartments mounted on the exterior and others not
There was a shorter Casspir called the Casspir Dumpy
But never entered service afaik.
Hmm could be
My moms boyfriend was a mech troopie and he told me a funny story the other day of a guy who fractured his skull when he tried to rambo kick the doors open, unfortunately the doors are spring mounted so if you kick only one door open itll swing back and as he was jumping out the door basically b*tch slapped him back inside
Haha damn he must have had a pretty bad day!
Indeed
Rendering out the Buffel now with the new tires
Looks so much better now
Is the bonnet of the Samil Kwevoel just that mesh with a frame?
Don't tell me I have to model the bloody engine too ๐ฐ
i dont know if it is you need.....it is forum of war of angola war
Ja can't really see the bonnet whether it's possible to see the engine through it. I hope not as I'd like to avoid modeling the engine. But if it is visible then I have no choice. In the meantime I'm modeling the soft skinned variant
Will model the armoured cab as well but not just yet. Just need to get the frame of the vehicle right before I do the armoured cab.
Quite boxy at the moment. The edges will be rounded off soon
ill check if i cant find any info
Alright lekker
okay good news you dont have to model the engine
since the radiator is behind the mesh you cant see the engine
Fantastic ๐
I have it
ok
I think in the images there were the two versions of bonnet ... but this is something difficult to distinguish
Possibly
there are two versions
one with the mesh and one with slats like a ww2 halftrack almost
Got the windscreen rounded. Now to get the rest of the cabin is a bit tricky. Curved surfaces are so much harder to do than boxy straight edges like the armoured cab variant. That'll actually be easier to model.
