looking very nice

2019-03-31 00:27:43 UTC

Anyone know what those "lids" are for at the top rear of the Ratel?

2019-03-31 00:28:29 UTC

The rectangular shaped ones. That are on the top rear left side of the vehicle.

2019-03-31 02:17:56 UTC

Little bit more progress today.

* Cut hole for the rear escape door.

* Added driver's window shields.

* Cut hole in bottom storage compartment below the side doors.

* Added base head lights.

* Added bulletproof glass to side viewports.

* Added bolts or knobs or whatever they are to the driver's front window frame, still lacking on the two side windows though.

* Cut hole for engine compartment ventilation and engine access area on the rear of the Ratel.

The hatch top left are the hatches to the engine compartment. I have includes and interior shot also.
Hope this helps?

2019-03-31 13:36:56 UTC

@PetraCephas Excellent! Thank you so much. This will help a ton!

2019-04-02 04:00:19 UTC

Another update on the Ratel.

* Switched out the turret for the 20mm just so I can get both the 20 and 90 at more or less the same progress level.

Worked a bit more on the interior. It's a bit of guess work at the moment as I only have a few angles of the interior of the ratel in my reference folder.

PS: The weird looking faces where the door opening and other openings are is because I forgot to triangulate the Ngon areas for marmoset. Marmoset freaks out with Ngons and does that weird stuff.

I need more interior reference images though as I have no idea what the floor of the ratel looks like

2019-04-03 10:57:22 UTC

Also the differences between the Ratel 90, 20, 81, CMD and ZT3 interiors is going to be a lot of guess work as I know they are different as described in some of the books I've read.

2019-04-03 10:58:47 UTC

That's the one specific issue with modeling South African content. There is a serious lack of reference material out there compared to the US and Russian stuff 😬

2019-04-03 14:56:21 UTC

Lol pretty much true for everyone except the big 3

2019-04-12 11:00:06 UTC

Did some more modeling on the Galil, R4 and R5 last night.

Didn't make as much progress on it as I'd liked to. Will give it another session tonight and hopefully make some significant progress on it so it can be included in this month's Wrench.

2019-04-12 11:49:07 UTC

Glad to help

2019-04-12 13:26:04 UTC

R5 doesnt have bipod or bipod lugs btw

2019-04-12 13:26:27 UTC

Yup. I'll have to remove those parts on the R5

2019-04-12 13:26:49 UTC

Cool cool 😁

2019-04-12 13:27:02 UTC

Was the R5 reserved exclusively for pilots and crewmen or did regular infantry also have the option to use them?

2019-04-12 13:27:14 UTC

Special forces

2019-04-12 13:27:30 UTC

R4 was issued to everyone else

2019-04-12 13:27:45 UTC

I mean it folds up it pretty compact

2019-04-12 13:27:46 UTC

R5 was also used by pilots and crewmen right?

2019-04-12 13:27:50 UTC

2019-04-12 13:27:51 UTC

2019-04-12 13:28:00 UTC

Pilots mostly had pistols

2019-04-12 13:28:19 UTC

Ah alright

2019-04-12 13:30:03 UTC

Do you know exactly when the R4 was adopted?

2019-04-12 13:30:07 UTC

As so far I haven't got a clue

2019-04-12 13:30:24 UTC

Not mentioned in any of the books I've read thus far...

2019-04-12 13:30:25 UTC

2019-04-12 13:30:49 UTC

85 all the combat units had R4

2019-04-12 13:31:25 UTC

Im sitting with my dad and a pal if i should ask them any questions?

2019-04-12 13:32:15 UTC

Alright lekker, I needed to know because I want get the equipment more or less accurate per operation of course not every operation will be featured as not all of them were major ops

2019-04-12 13:32:29 UTC

Yes yes

2019-04-12 13:33:38 UTC

Ja I have a few questions on my mind right now

2019-04-12 13:33:46 UTC

Shoot my man

2019-04-12 13:37:09 UTC

I've found a couple of images of the Unimog soft skinned vehicle in use in SWA were these used quite often? As I'm not sure whether to include them or not as the Buffel is pretty much the same thing just with the armoured cabin.

It may just be a waste of time and resources to include this if it wasn't used in high numbers.

2019-04-12 13:38:41 UTC

Second question.

Was the Y2 MGL widely issued? I only have a few references of it and nothing more. I'd like to know what units and roles were they issued to and what time frame? 80's?

2019-04-12 13:39:58 UTC

Unimogs are early war, after 86 only SF in mozam used mogs

2019-04-12 13:40:26 UTC

You could maybe just use the buffel

2019-04-12 13:41:13 UTC

Ja I may consider doing the soft skin Unimog down the line just to flesh out the SADF early war period a bit but it's not a priority at the moment

2019-04-12 13:41:25 UTC

Have you shown them my Buffel and other vehicles?

2019-04-12 13:42:01 UTC

Snotneus was only issued to fighting units as far as they know

2019-04-12 13:42:16 UTC

My dad only used it when they were attached to 62 mech

2019-04-12 13:42:49 UTC

Wasn't the Snotneus the M79?

2019-04-12 13:43:02 UTC

Or was the "snotneus" nickname also applied to the Milkor Y2 MGL?

2019-04-12 13:45:06 UTC

My Milkor Y2 MGL still work in progress. Been awhile since I worked on it though as I was preoccupied with the other models.

2019-04-12 13:45:06 UTC

2019-04-12 13:45:23 UTC

They applied snotneus to all GLs

2019-04-12 13:45:40 UTC

Ah alright good to know

2019-04-12 13:45:49 UTC

2019-04-12 13:46:17 UTC

And it was issued after 83-84 as well

2019-04-12 13:46:45 UTC

They started using more MAGs per unit as well

2019-04-12 13:46:53 UTC

More mortars as well

2019-04-12 13:46:58 UTC

Lots of 60mm

2019-04-12 13:48:18 UTC

The M26 grenade was also used by troops correct? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/M-61Grenade.jpg

2019-04-12 13:53:13 UTC

Yes m26

2019-04-12 13:54:10 UTC

Was the writing on the grenade in English or Afrikaans? Since I believe they were locally manufactured the writing on the grenades if there was any may have differed from the US version? Might be something difficult to recall though.

2019-04-12 13:54:38 UTC

It's the small details like this that while not super important are nice to get right.

2019-04-12 13:58:02 UTC

2019-04-12 13:59:33 UTC

Okay cool. That's about it for now, thanks man.

2019-04-12 13:59:35 UTC

All english

2019-04-12 20:06:33 UTC

unimogs in africa

2019-04-12 20:06:54 UTC

Ja the SADF used plenty of them. The Buffel uses a Unimog chassis

2019-04-12 21:19:33 UTC

Still plenty of issues with bad proportions and such. As some stuff I've done by eye. I made the mistake of going too detailed too soon on this which is biting me in the arse now.

2019-04-13 20:53:52 UTC

Current line up of WIP vehicle models.

2019-04-13 20:55:17 UTC

Eland door holes look weird because they're N-gons which causes artifacts in Marmoset as well as UE4. They need to be turned into quads.

2019-04-13 20:56:08 UTC

either way it all looks very nice my man

2019-04-13 20:56:51 UTC

I wish they were all done already 😩 but it takes a hell of a lot of time and effort to get to that stage.

2019-04-13 20:58:15 UTC

Going to be a dream come true though seeing these in action in Squad.

2019-04-13 21:24:56 UTC

You and me both

2019-04-13 21:27:20 UTC

My shitty little test hut to see how buildings work in the SDK.

2019-04-13 21:28:35 UTC

Looks like something from rural Lesotho

2019-04-13 21:28:48 UTC

But not that bad

2019-04-13 21:28:59 UTC

Ja didn't really put much effort into it since it's just a test

2019-04-13 21:30:09 UTC

There will be huts and such for kraals as there were plenty in SWA and southern Angola. Of course concrete structures will also be included for the larger towns such as Cassinga, Ondjiva etc.

2019-04-13 21:31:00 UTC

Will have to do some research on those places though to figure out what kind of structures they had. Also will see what I can do with real world topography using World Machine and Google Maps

2019-04-13 21:31:03 UTC

Ahh ok so these will only be scattered about?

2019-04-13 21:31:17 UTC

They'll be concentrated in rural villages

2019-04-13 21:31:23 UTC

No lone huts

2019-04-13 21:31:27 UTC

Ok cool

2019-04-13 21:31:34 UTC

Something like this -

2019-04-13 21:32:55 UTC

2019-04-13 21:36:03 UTC

Aahh ok and will they be widely spaced between settlement to settlement? But nothing extreme?

2019-04-13 21:36:29 UTC

As in large distances from one village to another?

2019-04-13 21:36:49 UTC

2019-04-13 21:38:34 UTC

Ja probably. It depends on the area where the map is for example the Cassinga map would feature Cassinga and depending on how large the map itself is it may include other surrounding villages.

Some maps in Squad are based on real world locations such as Skorpo (name may be wrong) which was made by Zeno. I'll seek advice from him when I get to making the actual maps since I want the maps to be based on real world locations using real world satellite data.

2019-04-13 21:39:10 UTC

So rivers will be exactly where they are in reality and their shape as well

2019-04-13 21:39:32 UTC

Of course there may be some liberties taken if necessary.

2019-04-13 21:40:06 UTC

Ahh ok wicked yeah cause 1 to 1 scale will be impossible

2019-04-13 21:41:12 UTC

Ja the scale would likely be off as Zeno's map is as well. I'm a total noob when it comes to map making so I'm talking out of inexperience at the moment. Once I start tackling that we'll see what happens.

2019-04-13 21:42:19 UTC

Ueah nah dont worry i have no knowledge of map making other that building weird shit age of empires and stuff

2019-04-13 21:43:41 UTC

2019-04-14 09:07:32 UTC

2019-04-14 12:40:54 UTC

@kappa007 They're awesome hey? They pack a hell of a punch capable of taking out T-34'85s and T-55's (the latter at close range)

You haven't seen the ZT3 variant yet πŸ˜‰

2019-04-14 12:41:20 UTC

i mean t34's should be ez

2019-04-14 12:41:26 UTC

but t55 were pretty well armored

2019-04-14 12:41:37 UTC

Did you guys see the minimap

2019-04-14 12:42:45 UTC

Another ZT3

2019-04-14 12:43:18 UTC

These were introduced towards the last days of the war. They did bloody well. They took out several T-55's in the Battle of the Lomba IIRC.

2019-04-14 12:43:48 UTC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JnHOS8SIPE voice comms of a Ratel ZT3 taking out enemy tanks.

2019-04-14 13:00:32 UTC

interesting to hear

2019-04-15 00:34:05 UTC

Basic box out of the G6 Rhino.

Nothing much to see at the moment hope to bring it up to the same level of detail as the other vehicles in the pipeline in the next few days.

Don't worry Kooij they won't be on the R4 just the Galil

2019-04-15 15:43:55 UTC

Ill take your word for it 😁

2019-04-15 15:44:48 UTC

Will post a pic of SADF using the wood grip galil with the ugly carry handles πŸ˜‹

2019-04-15 15:48:22 UTC

2019-04-15 15:48:23 UTC

2019-04-15 15:48:35 UTC

No carry handles on that though

2019-04-15 15:48:37 UTC

You can see it in his eyes

2019-04-15 15:48:41 UTC

The self hate

Smh poor guy

2019-04-15 15:48:53 UTC

2019-04-15 15:49:36 UTC

This little buggy is pretty cool. Never found any other pics of it though.

2019-04-15 15:50:35 UTC

Lol its a parts kit built on a vw beetle engine

2019-04-15 15:50:46 UTC

Literally a beach buggy

2019-04-15 15:51:03 UTC

See lots of them in the western cape in holiday season

2019-04-15 15:51:06 UTC

Ah alright

2019-04-15 15:51:22 UTC

Would be a fun little easter egg to have so a big maybe in the future

2019-04-15 15:51:51 UTC

Lol id rather have a jakkals

2019-04-15 15:51:52 UTC

2019-04-15 15:52:37 UTC

Y u do dis

2019-04-15 15:52:40 UTC

I agree I do prefer the polymer grip R4's

2019-04-15 15:52:49 UTC

than the wood grip it's gross

2019-04-15 15:52:55 UTC

Thank fuck the licenses were only like 2 years

2019-04-15 15:52:58 UTC

Oh and the carry handle πŸ˜„

2019-04-15 15:53:20 UTC

Hahahahha yeah

2019-04-15 15:53:43 UTC

Your model is looking great tho you need any more pics let me know

2019-04-15 15:54:48 UTC

Sure thing will let you know πŸ˜‰

2019-04-15 15:55:01 UTC

2019-04-15 15:55:21 UTC

2019-04-15 15:55:43 UTC

It's unlikely I'll include an interior for the whole G6 though as I have no idea what it looks like inside. The only interior will be the driver's compartment

2019-04-15 15:56:15 UTC

It's going to be seriously OP πŸ˜„

2019-04-15 15:57:14 UTC

Dont really know how you can ever balance it tho

2019-04-15 15:57:28 UTC

It can only fire 2 rounds a minute IIRC

2019-04-15 15:57:36 UTC

Lol wut

2019-04-15 15:57:38 UTC

2019-04-15 15:57:45 UTC

Burst is 8

2019-04-15 15:57:55 UTC

Wut!? jislaaik

2019-04-15 15:57:57 UTC

Then 4 continuous

2019-04-15 15:58:26 UTC

They won't be on every map

2019-04-15 15:58:29 UTC

But yeah i mean they are going to add commander called arty

2019-04-15 15:58:32 UTC

only where they were historically

2019-04-15 15:58:43 UTC

So maybe unusable asset that just shoots on command?

2019-04-15 15:58:49 UTC

And very few in number. So I don't think they will respawn once destroyed

2019-04-15 15:58:53 UTC

uring 1987 Cuban and FAPLA forces were concentrated in the east of Angola known to them as 5th Military District. Operations launched by them were aimed at destroying UNJTA, including their main base at Jamba. As a counter-measure, the SADF undertook Operation Modular in aid of UNITA which lasted from 1 July to 15 December 1987. This was followed up by Operation Hooper and culminated in Operation Packer which ended in March 1988. During this period two G5 batteries were employed, playing a prominent role in destroying enemy forces. During these operations it was found that the HE projectiles of the G5 could be used to great effect against the T-55 tanks employed by the opposing force. Between 20 and 30 tanks were in this way put out of action by the G5s. It was also found that when an HE projectile hit the ground and detonated 15 in from a tank, chances were good that the tank concerned would be disabled. The enemy had no tactical equipment that could withstand the 155 mm shell of the G5. After Operation Packer, a further operation took place in south eastern Angola. This was Operation Displace during which the G5 was also used.(51)
