Oof
looking very nice
Anyone know what those "lids" are for at the top rear of the Ratel?
The rectangular shaped ones. That are on the top rear left side of the vehicle.
Little bit more progress today.
* Cut hole for the rear escape door.
* Added driver's window shields.
* Cut hole in bottom storage compartment below the side doors.
* Added base head lights.
* Added bulletproof glass to side viewports.
* Added bolts or knobs or whatever they are to the driver's front window frame, still lacking on the two side windows though.
* Cut hole for engine compartment ventilation and engine access area on the rear of the Ratel.
The hatch top left are the hatches to the engine compartment. I have includes and interior shot also.
Hope this helps?
@PetraCephas Excellent! Thank you so much. This will help a ton!
Another update on the Ratel.
* Switched out the turret for the 20mm just so I can get both the 20 and 90 at more or less the same progress level.
Worked a bit more on the interior. It's a bit of guess work at the moment as I only have a few angles of the interior of the ratel in my reference folder.
PS: The weird looking faces where the door opening and other openings are is because I forgot to triangulate the Ngon areas for marmoset. Marmoset freaks out with Ngons and does that weird stuff.
These are my interior references.
Nice
I need more interior reference images though as I have no idea what the floor of the ratel looks like
Also the differences between the Ratel 90, 20, 81, CMD and ZT3 interiors is going to be a lot of guess work as I know they are different as described in some of the books I've read.
That's the one specific issue with modeling South African content. There is a serious lack of reference material out there compared to the US and Russian stuff ๐ฌ
Lol pretty much true for everyone except the big 3
Did some more modeling on the Galil, R4 and R5 last night.
Didn't make as much progress on it as I'd liked to. Will give it another session tonight and hopefully make some significant progress on it so it can be included in this month's Wrench.
@Kooijpolloi Those references have helped a ton so far. Still a long way to go on this though...
Glad to help
R5 doesnt have bipod or bipod lugs btw
Yup. I'll have to remove those parts on the R5
Cool cool ๐
Was the R5 reserved exclusively for pilots and crewmen or did regular infantry also have the option to use them?
Special forces
R4 was issued to everyone else
I mean it folds up it pretty compact
R5 was also used by pilots and crewmen right?
Nope
R4
Pilots mostly had pistols
Ah alright
Do you know exactly when the R4 was adopted?
As so far I haven't got a clue
Not mentioned in any of the books I've read thus far...
83-84
85 all the combat units had R4
Im sitting with my dad and a pal if i should ask them any questions?
Alright lekker, I needed to know because I want get the equipment more or less accurate per operation of course not every operation will be featured as not all of them were major ops
Yes yes
Ja I have a few questions on my mind right now
Shoot my man
I've found a couple of images of the Unimog soft skinned vehicle in use in SWA were these used quite often? As I'm not sure whether to include them or not as the Buffel is pretty much the same thing just with the armoured cabin.
It may just be a waste of time and resources to include this if it wasn't used in high numbers.
Second question.
Was the Y2 MGL widely issued? I only have a few references of it and nothing more. I'd like to know what units and roles were they issued to and what time frame? 80's?
Unimogs are early war, after 86 only SF in mozam used mogs
You could maybe just use the buffel
Ja I may consider doing the soft skin Unimog down the line just to flesh out the SADF early war period a bit but it's not a priority at the moment
Have you shown them my Buffel and other vehicles?
Snotneus was only issued to fighting units as far as they know
My dad only used it when they were attached to 62 mech
Wasn't the Snotneus the M79?
Or was the "snotneus" nickname also applied to the Milkor Y2 MGL?
My Milkor Y2 MGL still work in progress. Been awhile since I worked on it though as I was preoccupied with the other models.
They applied snotneus to all GLs
Ah alright good to know
And it was issued after 83-84 as well
They started using more MAGs per unit as well
More mortars as well
Lots of 60mm
The M26 grenade was also used by troops correct? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/78/M-61Grenade.jpg
Yes m26
Was the writing on the grenade in English or Afrikaans? Since I believe they were locally manufactured the writing on the grenades if there was any may have differed from the US version? Might be something difficult to recall though.
It's the small details like this that while not super important are nice to get right.
English
Okay cool. That's about it for now, thanks man.
All english
Cool cool
wait
unimogs in africa
Ja the SADF used plenty of them. The Buffel uses a Unimog chassis
superb vehicles
german engineering
\
progress so far today.
* Galil
* R4
* R5
Still plenty of issues with bad proportions and such. As some stuff I've done by eye. I made the mistake of going too detailed too soon on this which is biting me in the arse now.
Current line up of WIP vehicle models.
Eland door holes look weird because they're N-gons which causes artifacts in Marmoset as well as UE4. They need to be turned into quads.
either way it all looks very nice my man
I wish they were all done already ๐ฉ but it takes a hell of a lot of time and effort to get to that stage.
Going to be a dream come true though seeing these in action in Squad.
You and me both
My shitty little test hut to see how buildings work in the SDK.
Looks like something from rural Lesotho
But not that bad
Ja didn't really put much effort into it since it's just a test
There will be huts and such for kraals as there were plenty in SWA and southern Angola. Of course concrete structures will also be included for the larger towns such as Cassinga, Ondjiva etc.
Will have to do some research on those places though to figure out what kind of structures they had. Also will see what I can do with real world topography using World Machine and Google Maps
Ahh ok so these will only be scattered about?
They'll be concentrated in rural villages
No lone huts
Ok cool
Something like this -
Aahh ok and will they be widely spaced between settlement to settlement? But nothing extreme?
As in large distances from one village to another?
Yeah
Ja probably. It depends on the area where the map is for example the Cassinga map would feature Cassinga and depending on how large the map itself is it may include other surrounding villages.
Some maps in Squad are based on real world locations such as Skorpo (name may be wrong) which was made by Zeno. I'll seek advice from him when I get to making the actual maps since I want the maps to be based on real world locations using real world satellite data.
So rivers will be exactly where they are in reality and their shape as well
Of course there may be some liberties taken if necessary.
Ahh ok wicked yeah cause 1 to 1 scale will be impossible
Ja the scale would likely be off as Zeno's map is as well. I'm a total noob when it comes to map making so I'm talking out of inexperience at the moment. Once I start tackling that we'll see what happens.
Ueah nah dont worry i have no knowledge of map making other that building weird shit age of empires and stuff
And Building your own little maps to do skermishes on for wow
Oh man this is looking great!
damn damn daaamn
those 2 armored cars with 90mms
<a:Wet:393566022285787138>
@kappa007 They're awesome hey? They pack a hell of a punch capable of taking out T-34'85s and T-55's (the latter at close range)
You haven't seen the ZT3 variant yet ๐
i mean t34's should be ez
but t55 were pretty well armored
Did you guys see the minimap
<:eyess:355505317125292044> zt3
show mee
ZT3 variant
81 variant
Another ZT3
These were introduced towards the last days of the war. They did bloody well. They took out several T-55's in the Battle of the Lomba IIRC.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JnHOS8SIPE voice comms of a Ratel ZT3 taking out enemy tanks.
interesting to hear
Basic box out of the G6 Rhino.
Nothing much to see at the moment hope to bring it up to the same level of detail as the other vehicles in the pipeline in the next few days.
Ooof
She is a beast ๐
@Springbok carry handle ๐คข ๐คข ๐คข ๐คข
๐ The early ones had em
Don't worry Kooij they won't be on the R4 just the Galil
Ill take your word for it ๐
Will post a pic of SADF using the wood grip galil with the ugly carry handles ๐
PUUUUUKKKEEEE
No carry handles on that though
You can see it in his eyes
The self hate
Smh poor guy
๐
This little buggy is pretty cool. Never found any other pics of it though.
Lol its a parts kit built on a vw beetle engine
Literally a beach buggy
See lots of them in the western cape in holiday season
Ah alright
Would be a fun little easter egg to have so a big maybe in the future
Lol id rather have a jakkals
Ja Jakkals will come in at some point
Y u do dis
I agree I do prefer the polymer grip R4's
than the wood grip it's gross
Thank fuck the licenses were only like 2 years
Oh and the carry handle ๐
Hahahahha yeah
Your model is looking great tho you need any more pics let me know
Sure thing will let you know ๐
nice
It's unlikely I'll include an interior for the whole G6 though as I have no idea what it looks like inside. The only interior will be the driver's compartment
It's going to be seriously OP ๐
Dont really know how you can ever balance it tho
It can only fire 2 rounds a minute IIRC
Lol wut
No
Burst is 8
Wut!? jislaaik
Then 4 continuous
They won't be on every map
But yeah i mean they are going to add commander called arty
only where they were historically
So maybe unusable asset that just shoots on command?
And very few in number. So I don't think they will respawn once destroyed
Nah I want it useable
I mean
Because I know... If I made it so you could not drive it people would be begging for me to make it driveable
Playing arty is pretty boring ๐
I get that
Not when you can drive around and shoot at tanks ๐
Apparently due to the size of the round itself it could take out enemy tanks if needed
Never used on a G6
Happened to a battery og G5 once
uring 1987 Cuban and FAPLA forces were concentrated in the east of Angola known to them as 5th Military District. Operations launched by them were aimed at destroying UNJTA, including their main base at Jamba. As a counter-measure, the SADF undertook Operation Modular in aid of UNITA which lasted from 1 July to 15 December 1987. This was followed up by Operation Hooper and culminated in Operation Packer which ended in March 1988. During this period two G5 batteries were employed, playing a prominent role in destroying enemy forces. During these operations it was found that the HE projectiles of the G5 could be used to great effect against the T-55 tanks employed by the opposing force. Between 20 and 30 tanks were in this way put out of action by the G5s. It was also found that when an HE projectile hit the ground and detonated 15 in from a tank, chances were good that the tank concerned would be disabled. The enemy had no tactical equipment that could withstand the 155 mm shell of the G5. After Operation Packer, a further operation took place in south eastern Angola. This was Operation Displace during which the G5 was also used.(51)
Yes G 5 i met a guy who was in that battery
I'd like to model the G5 but it's way more complicated than the G6
I know my history ๐
Lol now that i want to drive around
๐ I know you do hence why you're an advisor.
I'd do the G5 but I have no blueprint of it
So it may come but later on.
Taking my pet G5 for a stroll
I've seen both the G6 and G5 at the war museum in Joburg
Ive seen them in action a few times
