The Church Committee learned that, beginning in the 1950s, the CIA and Federal Bureau of Investigation had intercepted, opened and photographed more than 215,000 pieces of mail by the time the program (called "HTLINGUAL") was shut down in 1973. This program was all done under the "mail covers" program (a mail cover is a process by which the government recordsโwithout any requirement for a warrant or for notificationโall information on the outside of an envelope or package, including the name of the sender and the recipient). The Church report found that the CIA was careful about keeping the United States Postal Service from learning that government agents were opening mail. CIA agents moved mail to a private room to open the mail or in some cases opened envelopes at night after stuffing them in briefcases or in coat pockets to deceive postal officials.[12]
lol
On May 9, 1975, the Church Committee decided to call acting CIA director William Colby. That same day Ford's top advisers (Henry Kissinger, Donald Rumsfeld, Philip W. Buchen, and John Marsh) drafted a recommendation that Colby be authorized to brief only rather than testify, and that he would be told to discuss only the general subject, with details of specific covert actions to be avoided except for realistic hypotheticals. But the Church Committee had full authority to call a hearing and require Colby's testimony. Ford and his top advisers met with Colby to prepare him for the hearing.[13] Colby testified, "These last two months have placed American intelligence in danger. The almost hysterical excitement surrounding any news story mentioning CIA or referring even to a perfectly legitimate activity of CIA has raised a question whether secret intelligence operations can be conducted by the United States."
On August 17, 1975 Senator Frank Church appeared on NBC's Meet the Press, and discussed the NSA, without mentioning it by name:
In the need to develop a capacity to know what potential enemies are doing, the United States government has perfected a technological capability that enables us to monitor the messages that go through the air. (...) Now, that is necessary and important to the United States as we look abroad at enemies or potential enemies. We must know, at the same time, that capability at any time could be turned around on the American people, and no American would have any privacy left: such is the capability to monitor everythingโtelephone conversations, telegrams, it doesn't matter. There would be no place to hide.
If this government ever became a tyranny, if a dictator ever took charge in this country, the technological capacity that the intelligence community has given the government could enable it to impose total tyranny, and there would be no way to fight back because the most careful effort to combine together in resistance to the government, no matter how privately it was done, is within the reach of the government to know. Such is the capability of this technology. (...)
I don't want to see this country ever go across the bridge. I know the capacity that is there to make tyranny total in America, and we must see to it that this agency and all agencies that possess this technology operate within the law and under proper supervision so that we never cross over that abyss. That is the abyss from which there is no return.
R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr., editor of the conservative magazine The American Spectator, wrote that the committee "betrayed CIA agents and operations." The committee had not received names, so had none to release, as confirmed by later CIA director George H. W. Bush. However, Senator Jim McClure used the allegation in the 1980 election, when Church was defeated.[17]
The Committee's work has more recently been criticized after the September 11 attacks, for leading to legislation reducing the ability of the CIA to gather human intelligence.[18][17][19][20] In response to such criticism, the chief counsel of the committee, Frederick A.O. Schwarz Jr., retorted with a book co-authored by Aziz Z. Huq, denouncing the Bush administration's use of 9/11 to make "monarchist claims" that are "unprecedented on this side of the North Atlantic".[21]
In September 2006, the University of Kentucky hosted a forum called "Who's Watching the Spies? Intelligence Activities and the Rights of Americans," bringing together two Democratic committee members, former Vice President of the United States Walter Mondale and former U.S. Senator Walter "Dee" Huddleston of Kentucky, and Schwarz to discuss the committee's work, its historical impact, and how it pertains to today's society.

Operation Gladio is the codename for a clandestine North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) "stay-behind" operation in Europe during the Cold War. Its purpose was to prepare for, and implement, armed resistance in the event of a Warsaw Pact invasion and conquest. The name Gladio is the Italian form of gladius, a type of Roman shortsword. Although Gladio specifically refers to the Italian branch of the NATO stay-behind organizations, "Operation Gladio" is used as an informal name for all of them. Stay-behind operations were prepared in many NATO member countries, and some neutral countries.[1]
The role of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Gladio and the extent of its activities during the Cold War era, and any relationship to terrorist attacks perpetrated in Italy during the "Years of Lead" (late 1960s to early 1980s) are the subject of debate. Switzerland and Belgium have had parliamentary inquiries into the matter.
Mr Trump???? TRY President Trump Show due respect
The Shadow Factory: The Ultra-Secret NSA from 9/11 to the Eavesdropping on America is a book on the National Security Agency by author James Bamford.
Bamford's book contains a description of a processing center at NSA's Fort Gordon, Georgia facility, and Operation Highlander, with which it was associated. The staff there analyzed satellite telephone signals (like Inmarsat) from all over the Middle East. They performed various operations such as matching up phone numbers with names of organizations or individuals, recording messages, finding the locations of cellphones, call chaining analysis, language identification and translation, and assigning 'importance' numbers to the "cuts" (recordings).
Bamford's book contains the statements of people who worked there, including Adrienne J. Kinne and John Berry. Berry says that the operation never violated Americans' rights and contributed a good deal to the war effort. Kinne says that they were listening to the phone calls of Americans in the Middle East making calls back to the States, including NGOs, aid workers, and journalists at the Palestine Hotel. Kinne contrasts her years of work before 9/11 in SIGINT and the careful attention paid to USSID 18 with her work after 9/11 and the way USSID 18 was essentially ignored.[1][2] Kinne later became part of Iraq Veterans Against the War.[3]
The NSA Inspector General and the US Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) investigated her allegations. They claimed they 'found insufficient evidence to support Kinne's allegations of improper intelligence activities'. Kinne says the NSA IG never even interviewed her. The Congress also questioned NSA and the Army about the matter.

Jeffrey Adam Zucker[2] (born April 9, 1965) is an American media executive. He previously served as president and CEO of NBC Universal.[3] Zucker served as an executive in residence at Columbia Business School.[4] In November 2012, Zucker was picked to take over as the president of CNN Worldwide in January 2013 after Jim Walton's tenure.[5] Zucker oversees CNN, CNN International, HLN, and CNN Digital.[6]

CNN chief Jeff Zucker didnโt mince words Thursday in sizing up the state of Fox News, calling the rival all-news cabler โstate-run TVโ and โa pure propaganda machine.โ
Zucker spoke at the Financial Times-hosted Future of News conference in New York. In discussing the general state of the cable TV marketplace, Zucker said he feels Fox News has taken a bad turn during the past two years with unquestioning coverage of the Trump administration. Even in the sharp elbows world of cable TV news, Zuckerโs comments were surprisingly harsh as a blanket statement about a competitor.
โWhat has happened there in the last two years is somewhat shocking frankly. It really is state-run TV,โ Zucker said in a Q&A with the Financial Timesโ Matthew Garrahan. โIt is a pure propaganda machine and I think it does an incredible disservice to this country.โ
Zuckerโs comments echoed the sentiment of former Fox News contributor Lt. Col. Ralph Peters, who resigned from his role at the network citing concerns about the quality of the journalism at Fox News.
โHe said out loud what many have been saying about what Fox News has become,โ Zucker said. โWhat has happened to that network in the last 18 months, especially in the last year, it has just turned itself over to state-run TV. Tass has nothing on them.โ
Zucker allowed that Fox News has โa handful of really good journalists there but they are lost in what is a complete propaganda machine.โ
Zucker declined to elaborate on his remarks when asked by Variety after the Q&A. Before he left the stage, however, he apologized to CNN PR chief Allison Gollust, who was in the audience.
The session wasnโt all about bashing Fox News. Zucker spoke of how CNN balances its breaking news coverage largely on digital platforms while the linear channel focuses on deep dives into a handful of top stories at any given time.
โWeโre covering more news than we ever covered before and most of that is on our digital platforms,โ he said. โEverybody here is going to find out whatโs going on from their phone. And so we provide all that news and information (online). People are not going to come to TV to find a wheel of (stories about) whatโs going on in the world. Theyโre going to find that on their phone. On television we go much deeper on the one, two, or three stories driving the news that day.โ
Zucker emphasized that digital has expanded CNNโs reach to unprecedented levels. โWeโve had three of the most-watched years in the history of CNN. In digital, nobody touches in terms of audience levels.โ
Zucker was also asked about his complicated relationship with President Trump. Zucker was running CNN at the time that โThe Apprenticeโ turned Donald Trump into a household name. Zucker said he was concerned that Trumpโs incessant hammering of mainstream news organizations is dangerous to journalists.
โHe has whipped up anti-media sentient that is dangerous and frankly harmful and potentially incredibly dangerous,โ Zucker said. โI think he doesnโt even understand the danger heโs causing the journalists and the danger heโs doing to media organizations. None of that changes our daily responsibility which is to get the facts right and tell the truth. Our job is to hold those in power accountable. Thatโs our only job.โ
Zuckerโs comments came on the same day as opening statements in the anti-trust trial in Washington, D.C. that will determine the fate of AT&Tโs $85.4 billion merger with CNN parent Time Warner. Trumpโs animus toward CNN is widely viewed as one reason why the Justice Department is fighting the merger. Zucker said he has โabsolutely no ideaโ if those assumptions are true. โThe case is happening now, weโll let that play out,โ he said.
