selection does the job for cropping

Hmm, I forget what all I was doing, but I think I was trying to crop something the other week and couldn't find a crop to selection in any of the toolbar menus.

selection > edit > copy as a new or somthing like that

Well, gimp has a "paste as" function.

"Paste as layer"

it does create a new project, but the preset can be "clipboard" so it select the right size, etc from your last selection copy

I ended up creating like 12 different gradient and posterize / threshold layers.

i'm not really used to edit images and videos anymore, so I can't really help with that
