Is there some sort of actuarial calculation going on where A='dollars spent on discrimination lawsuits' and B='money wasted on diversity bullshit' and if A>B you hire a diversity officer.
someone told me last year that half of all youtube views are fake
something to do with youtube inflating traffic with fake views to sell ads
never got a source of a news, guess is just a rumour
i think the gobt should regulate youtube
on the ads stuff
I think Tim is right and nothing is going to happen to regulate big tech. I looked on some conservative forums and support for any kind of intervention is very low. Most are taking the NRO opinion, which is basically "yes these companies are biased and are fucking us over and deplatforming us, but private companies can do whatever they want"
If you don't like it host your server in your basement or something and make your own trillion dollar social media giant.
Yeah, the base is kinda naive. You even see it here when I get into the fights with Beemann.
That twitch video from the Quartering is a big part of why I don't trust "alternatives" either.
That said, I can smell things changing.
That NRO article mentions going to some panels and the panel being uniformly in favor of some kind of regulation.
/r/conservative went from being 'maybe we should talk about Net Neutrality' to 'TIME TO REGULATE' or 'BREAK UP GOOGLE!'
I think it's a case of the people who are technically sophisticated and aware of all the news versus the "principles" types who stick their heads up their asses and talk among each other all day.
There's an article I pass around here where a progressive senator from Washington was criticizing "hypocritical free market republicans like Ted Cruz who want to do something to Google"
And the Dems and Social media in particular are going after Ted Cruz HARD in this re-election cycle.
*something* smells. But it's not yet raised to a level of cohesive action yet.
A bunch of attorney generals in red states actually are starting an anti-trust suit against Google *right now*.
There's also a component of the tech illiterate not understanding that there really is a monopoly here. Google is ~96% of US search engine market, and Youtube is roughly the same for video sharing. The social media market is a little more competitive at first glance, until you dig deeper and learn that they're actually all part of the same 2-3 parent companies.
Stupiditiy isn't a monopoly.
Also, if you're in TX, Reddit *does not like* Ted Cruz. And the forums and back channels are backlogged with cases of pretty obvious manipulation. If it's reddit corporate or ShareBlue behind it isn't really clear. But there's a very obvious astroturf operation against Ted Cruz right now and Reddit's administration seems supportive. He's got them scared.
If this stuff bothers you, seriously consider voting for Cruz. I'm not sure what he's said. But he's clearly got the tech giants worried.
And it's happening behind closed doors.
One thing that might help would be designating the donation of services as a political contribution. If a newspaper gave a political party free advertising space for an election cycle, that would cause an uproar, but if Facebook, Google, or Reddit give the democrats free analytics or promotion, nobody bats an eye.
@Atkins It's actually worse than that. Google's tools are used by everyone else too in an internal capacity.
Then there's the ad monopoly. There was an anti-trust suit under consideration back under George W Bush, but Schmidt was very close to the Obama Administration and it got shut down.
Yes, I can agree, but you'd have a hard time drawing that line.
And services should be. They are in other industries.
Is there an ad monopoly? I wouldn't know since I've always used an adblocker.
Well, I'd like congress to at least think about it. But it's hard to drag them away from the 'muh Russia' narrative when they get these people on the hill.
Cruz may've been the only Senator to question Facebook's CDA 230 immunity.
@devpav Oh, yes. Back under Bush it was >90%. It's now down to something like 60-70% because Facebook, Reddit and Twitter. But if you see ads on a random webpage it's almost certainly routing through Google or a Google subsidiary.
Mostly Google bought out all the other competing ad services.
And routed their information and services through their own systems.
Digital advertising seems like such a massive fail nowadays.
@Atkins I got a bad feeling there's going to be a bloodbath and then the Dems are going to make regulations that will make all the censorship far worse and enshrined into law. They've already proposed things like banning anonymity.
A bloodbath for whom?
I also think the average Republican congressman is hopelessly behind on this stuff. They got outflanked by Obama;s campaign twice and I can see them getting outflanked again.
Hah.
Muh blue wave?
I actually think the polling is *understating* Democrat performance as it tends not to poorly sample the young. And as someone who works with the young frequently, I can say they're like mindless Reddit zombies who take their marching orders from social media.
The polls consistently oversampled Democrats back in 2016.
They still do.
I get into this argument a lot around here so I don't want to get sidetracked. So we'll agree to leave it at this. You think there's going to be a red wave, I think there's going to be a blue one.
I think the GOP will gain at least 3 seats in the Senate.
By any means, the current congress should *really* be looking into this censorship while they still have a chance.
What about the House?
The GOP will hold the House.
I think the GOP will lose the house solidly. Not sure what happens in the Senate.
But again, I think this stuff needs to be taken care of *now*
Regardless of November.
And do vote, I have very strong doubts the Democrats will do anything but frame censorship and destruction of privacy into law.
Anonymity has already been confirmed as a right by the Supreme Court.
...you do know it's usually Republican-nominated judges who limit the rights under 4th, right?
Sure?
Doesn't mean anything about social media.
'Hate speech' has been obliterated by the Supreme Court as a source of legal liability for social media platforms, too.
Remember that whole "unlock the Apple phone" fiasco?
They've said that hate speech isn't a valid restriction on speech from the government point of view, but that does leave it open for private entities.
Anyhow, I'm not doing it. They can lock me up.
Don't give a fuck.
Matal v. Tam
"You don't have a right to the platform" is legally correct (if not morally) until the social media platforms become recognized as a public square or common carrier.
Or as a monopoly.
^
Also, Matal v. Tam is government again.
It's the patent office.
The public/private distinction is an area FIRE has to dance around with alot. It's much easier for them to go after Public Universities than Private ones.
It's 1A jurisprudence regarding 'hate speech'.
Doesn't matter for social media platforms.
Atleast legally.
This is why I think it's so key to recognize very large social media platforms as a public square or something similar.
It means there's no CDA 230 exemption for hate speech.
Grenade found a nice video explaining that CDA 230 is somewhat misunderstood. It allows moderation under some kind of terms.
I'm not entirely sure what to make of it all. The wording of the law would suggest some kind of public square situation and would seem to suggest they have to carry political speech neutrally. But, if so, it hasn't worked out in lawsuits. Prager's lawsuit got dismissed pretty quickly and I'm sure he would have looked into it.
Frankly, very large social media as a public square should have been implemented awhile ago. Require that neutral platforms perform neutral treatment.
The Tech companies pushed Net Neutrality against the Telecoms (who were much better behaved on this issue IMHO). As far as I'm concerned, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
FWIW, Grenade seems to be of the stance CDA 230 should be repealed. I think that might just be counterproductive. But something clearly needs to change.
I'm also interested in looking at this from the angle of social media monopolies using their platforms to fix elections.
I am too. This actually is how Hayes got elected.
(from the guy who termed Net Neutrality--and singled out Google as needing it): https://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/12/books/review/excerpt-the-master-switch.html
Actually, @Timcast if you want to make a sensational vid that would get people more than a little riled up, Wu's take in the book is the kind of thing that would get people more than a little on edge. The election of 1876 was always highly contentious (the second election in which the popular vote winner lost--and the only one in which an outright majority of the country was opposed to the winner [the other elections have all had small voter turnouts to where it was only a plurality opposed]) and Wu states the negotiated compromise may have been because of leaked cables from the telegram monopoly.
It's actually a rather interesting story and crosses back into the Net Neutrality issue from several months ago and all the possible potential legislation regarding the big social giants including Google.
All in all, it's a very delicate issue. I'm actually with Ajit Pai on the case of Net Neutrality. The idea was good but the implementation was leaving open a potential for wide abuse. Regulators can be as bad or worse than companies and you have to balance it all carefully. It's not described in the excerpt, but it is in the history.
Really, we need good regulations to prevent abuse from the companies or the government.
i see that Tim got into the select group of privilaged people with random thumbnail
Tim gets all the privileges! <:TimThink:482277772497125378>
Yeah, and throttled, apparently.
when I don't catch the video fresh of the oven, I usually scan my sub feed for the blue thumbnail so I was confused for a second where is Tims main video
yes, I'm too lazy to check the notifications
I use discord. That's the reason I seem to be stuck here all the time.
You're no longer ranked in the Top 10. You've been slacking off
I'm gaining my sanity again? Or are the rest of you guys just losing it?
Actually, when was I top 10?
"companies with women on their boards tend to be risk averse and carry less debt"
which means they play it safe and will never be leaders in that field.
oh there is the storm, the news kept saying this big swirly thing was gonna come kill us all
I need a life.
i would give you mine, but you probably wouldnt want it lol
trade might have been a better word to use there than give lol
hey wait timcast and donut operator are the same people prove me wrong
@TylerC lol. It's fine. Mine's sorta working. Just got a couple flaws.
did they ever find out who doomcock was? i thought it would have been funny if it turned out to be tim
Can't say that about mine...
Sometimes that's a curse.
im looking for a sargonofakkad meme video where "little people" from les miserables plays in the background

Haaaaab
i have a feeling im better off if i dont hit play on that
Forreal
survey says!!!! dont click
i just ate dinner, i prefer to keep that down at the moment
Soo I found a bunch of Twitter ppl wishing "racists" to die from hurricane florence
not overly surprised about that
When will the left learn, when you wish for death on others from natural causes, don't be surprised if your glass house in California ends up on fire again
everyone thinks nothing but redneck racists here in nc
@R9b1t i saw that this morning
fuck sargon ....
very not true..... we do have a decent share of both, i wont deny that
also TISM is on right now
ya i got that on also
@TylerC its funny, cause I have family in NC, and all those ppl trying to do is live
yep, thats all im doing
Everyone is
No matter where
free as a bird, just wanna be left alone
neat
Even in cali, the most oppressive state in the USA, I am trying to live
i mean it's reflected from the original, but it shows the people who are voting for him
those who feel they can gain the most, and people living along bodies of water can shove it
come on over here to nc man, i give it shit because ive had some recent encounters that have worried the hell out of me, but for the most part nc is cool
I might donate to Tim to hit tier 3 patreon
Id donate to tim if he stopped sitting on the fence
ive been lurking for a month or so, kept trying to decide where to jump in, i get too nervous going live online anymore
I donate to him because we need more ppl fighting against the whole Russia collusion bs and the establishment
but this discord server seems cool
@R9b1t link to buy that shirt pls
๐คท
I would wear that in California
i have to say, nc is becoming more and more blue
they also have hodies and tank tops https://teedragons.com/products/2016-presidential-election-map-shirt
In NC
i personally like the blue hoodie
we were blue for both obama elections, i know the first, but im prestty sure the second
thanks mate
np
not sure if we will stay that way in 2020
we have chapel hill that pulls a TON of votes and voter sway
I think almost everyone voted Obama, I didn't vote sauce I barely tuned 18 on 06 but I would of votes for him even tho I am center right
MUH COLLUSION!!!~~!
Wow what bs
ya i voted for him both times, i believed all the hype, i wanted the hope
Mueller probe is illegal anyways but no one has the balls to call it
putin and the kremlin and be in collusion
@TylerC i voted first time if I could but after all the bs I voted for Ron Paul
**all 17 of our intelligence agencies**
hey that one looked like me
anyway sorry if u dont have a computer to stream webms
Where is the fucking collusion then? If all 17 agencies say they have the proof where is it?
i agree
they kept saying intelligence agencys this and that
they need to keep the proof hidden, until they finish it, cuz reasons you know? ๐
why didnt their evidence shut the case
if it was so daming
is all lies
else the people who are proven to be guilty might escape
everyone should be able to stream mp4s :-)
It's funny because the fbi says they ha e the evidence but the dnc said they never gave the fbi the server lol
here's some juice
i wont say he isnt guilty but i do feel like as quick as they manage to put people in jail these days for EVERYTHING ELSE
They are trying to say they will not find charges for John Kerry for doing unauthorized meetings on behalf of Iran to subvert Trump's foreign policies.
Uh you will find charges in US constitution, article 3, section 3 (https://www.usconstitution.net/xconst_A3Sec3.html), as well as charges from 1 Stat 613, 18 USC p 953 (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/953). Violating logan act can net him 3 years and violating article 3, section 3 of the constitution can net him 5 years. I am not even including how much he would fined by the government for each charge. He can charged for every single "unauthorized meeting" he conducted abroad which means he would face a very long prison sentence, basically 8 years per meeting he held in attempt to subvert Trump's foreign policies.
John Kerry's security clearance and all other security clearances held by those not who do not currently hold office or in active duty should have them rescinded aka pulled. Why are allowing these people have access to our nation's most vital and important information? This should be a eye opener and should be come as a warning for the future.๏ปฟ
<:TimThink:482277772497125378>
The whole think is a huge fucking joke
if this was real
it would have happened by now
I KNOW MY RIGHTS
did someone touch you ro?
Even then, the only guy they charged in these past 2 years was gorge papadopolis and he only got 14 days in jail for lieing to the fbi lmfao
The whole thing is a fucking joke
well this is the thing about pap and manafort
they are all cutting deals
Do you guys as well think John Kerry committed treason and violated Logan act by holding a unauthorized meetings with Iran and telling them to wait out Trump aka not engage him?
so its easy to look at their sentance as a result of the deal
MILLIONS OF FUCKING DOLLARS WASTED THROUGH A SPAN OF 2 FUCKING YEARS TO PUT SOMEONE IN JAIL FOR A FEW WEEKS
they got a lighter sentance for whatever has been said
the question is what have they offered up
and with todays manafort stuff
if there is something, it should come soon i would think
just going off how investigations usually tend to work
their deals are simple, they'll tell Mueller what they know about the Russia deal
I'd do so too ๐ 2 week sentence, and all i have to say is "Lol, theres nothing"
Especially with all the leaking
but it still feels like we, in the end, will be looking at some type of tax evasion charges
and I think Kerry committed treason yeah, like Hillary did
Didn't that Maddow woman got a hold of parts of Trumps tax form and it was just properly filed? ๐
like, they had nothing
there was somethign about that ya
but evasion wouldnt have been on that paper
thats why its evasion
Ita funny, they banned info wars becuse of his conspiracy theories, meanwhile the biggest conspiracy theory is being made in front of our eyes
but if thats all they can bring against trump after claiming crap like treason
thats really some messed up shit if you ask me
Mueller already said that Trump isn't targeted
I think its funnier that Alex Jones is starting to end up being right with all the "nonsense" he supposedly spouted
The question is, who did he say that too
wasn't it the former FBI guy?
the more stuff i dig into with him
who said Trump isn't under investigation
and i look at things the way his old mind does
i can understand his statements a bit
and see those little nuggets of truth in them
It's stupid becuse, for the past year Alex was like "the msm and silicon valley are trying to shut me down" then they all banned him and now not only is he a victim, but they also proved him to be right
its scary to me sometimes on soooooo many levels
that new law about female quota's is terrible for women
i saw some video pop up that spliced some of the alex jones rants from the joe rogan show
Google and fb have them
now everytime a company goes bad its going to be the "women's fault" because "quota hires"
next to the elom musk responses on the show
man it was creepy
Good, let it be wamens fault! ๐
freaked me the hell out
This I wanna see
women are not going to be treated as well as they are now
ill link it
one sec
I am in a love/hate relationship with Jimmy Dore
people know they worked hard to get where they are now.. but just by the pure existence of quota's it will put all that to sh*t
same with Affirmative action
